1997 CAT 416c backhoe, serial 4zn02511, shifts N to fwd harshly, N to reverse harshly, less harsh if I push the break. Just bought, never operated a backhoe before.
Is the engine idle speed correct? Having hand and foot throttle levers, and being over 25 years old, first thing I'd check is for full return of both the hand throttle and the foot pedal. With side hood cover off, does the throttle lever return to touch #1 adjustment screw?

Well that's odd, the shifting is working perfectly fine now. If you drive it to long or over heat it, will it start acting up in that way?
