my boss has a D3c II and hes gonna sell it to me cheap but the only problem is it won't go into gear unless it sits running for 10 to 15 mins. any ideas what this could be?? maybe a filter somewhere?? it has the 2 stick blade controls and the foot clutches. is this d3c even worth the effort to fix or are they nuttin but trouble?? dont have much experiences with the d3c II. its a new game to me.
Is that the single speed reverse? If it's the 3 speed reverse, pump is most likely weak. I can't believe the modulaing is hanging in the valve. If it's the single speed reverse...the suction strainer is high in the case and there is a pipe that runs up the case that will have an o-ring bad causing a suction leak. You can test this by over filling the transmission (do not operate long over full) but then crank it and see if it goes directly in gear. Check both trans this way, could be suction leak or weak pump on either one of them. If it picks up prime and goes in gear right away.....check suction side of pump 1st....then check pump. Make sure you pull suction strainers on it as well. If you see alot of metal the transmission is coming apart and this is what messed the pump up. If you only clean out old oil with metal in it, re-fill and install a new pump you're gona be wasting alot of money and time. I've always liked them ole machines. I have alot of customers that have these for a long time and they don't plan on gettin rid of 'em any time soon. But the trans, steer clutches and finals have to be maintained good. Can't get lazy on maintenance and inspections on this machine. It will bite you on the ***.
d3 we had a d3III at work....got it brand new in 98, never had any problems with it aside from 1 steel hydraulic line and the ussually undercarriage work. we only recently traded it in for a d5n but that was only because we are not doing many small residential lots and we are getting larger commercial stuff. great little finish dozer. easy to operate. yes the d5n is bigger and more comfortable but the d3 was so easy to use.
it has the 3 speed foward and 3 speed reverse. its in great shape but when it was new it was vandalized and driven into a pond so it got sent to cat where they did a full rebuild on it and put a new engine in it. after that it started to have that problem. i have to look at it some more. its the oldest smaller dozer that the company has so they wanna toss it. they just bought two new d3ks
