Have a D3b with 27Y serial number, was using it today and left track quit pulling. Right track operates as normal, and brake on left track works, but will not pull itself in either direction, I know that there are many things that could contribute to this, just wondering if anyone could narrow it down for me before I tear into it to see what it is, any help would be appreciated
pull your final drive filler plug and check with a magnet for metal check to see if control valve is stuck and keeping pressure on the clutch releasing it clutch itself don't normally go out all at once my bet is the control valve make sure linkage is not binding
If it works like the straight 931 and I think it does other than you should have swing pedals, you might check the following. There is a valve that hangs on the steering brake pedal. It moves with the pedal. It has a button on it. When you push the pedal the first three inches you push (or release?) the button diverting 300 PSI of transmission pressure to a 1" long cylinder that releases the clutch. That could be stuck in the release position. I have seen ice build up do it on mine and have heard of mud and crap doing the same to others. If that circuit is working and the clutch slave cylinder is moving about an inch maximum your steering clutch is kaput. Fairly easy to remove but very dangerous to disassemble the clutch unit if you are unfamiliar with them and don't have the correct press tooling. The manual recommends pulling it and have CAT rebuild the actual clutch pack. The track has to be off the ground to remove the clutch assembly bolts one at a time through a round hole in the side of the frame. Take one out and turn the track until the next bolt lines up with the hole. Not a bad job, just some bull work. Let us know how you make out.
