on a 1983 cat d3b i have removed the skid plate. two bolts on rear. when the right bolt (under hydraulic tank side is removed ii am getting oil (oil/hydraulic or mixture?) draining out. it is a slow drain and i am wondering if anyone knows where it could be coming from.
Welcome to HEF!
Question for you, Is there a plug on the side of clutch compartment by the sprockets Years ago we converted some 3s and 931s to wet clutches. Part of the change was to put silicone on the joints. just wondering if case oil is seeping into frame
i'll have to look tomorrow
looked this morning.not exactly sure where you are referencing but under the back inside there is the factory drain for i am assuming gearcase (one on other side also). i did open the right top where the bradke rods go to and inside that compartment there is oil. i believe the cylinder inside with plates is the brakes (not sure where the clutch plates are located). this also appears to be the oil that is draining out of the skidplate bolt. i cannot detect any leakage when the skidplate bolt is tightened. as you can probably tell i am fairly ignorant on dozers.
on further investigation the discs between center ring gear and track drive gear i believe are steering clutch discs under the plate and all are in an oil bath as stated above. i still can't figure out where the oil is coming from unless when drilling for skid plate bolt the case was punctured.
I think it could have been possible for someone to put bolts that were too long in the holes and crack it into case. You didn’t have a leak with bolts in ? If not I would put thread sealant on bolts before I put them in
that is what i am leaning towards as i can see no other explanation for the leakage, especially since the left bolt hole does not leak with bolt out. thanks for responding.
