gabelmatt · 2009-11-21 14:17

He guys,I found a D4C on the internet for sale for 7000$. It says that it has a blown tranny but otherwise in good shape.Just wondering how good of machine this would be(cause I've never owned a dozer) and how much money/work would be involved in fixing the tranny. Thanks

Aftermarket rebuilt transmissions can be had for reasonable prices. As far as how much work to change it out? Well, a D4 is not a real big machine. Depending on how you do it the manual for my D3 says you can drop it out the bottom or take it out the top. Which ever way the transmission is heavy and you will need a hoist, chain fall or what ever to come out the top or a good sized transmission jack to go through the bottom. I would lean toward coming out the top. The seat and deck plate will have to come off as well as the skid pan because you will need access from the top and bottom both. They can be fun to get broken loose when coming out and aligned when going back in. some bolts with the heads cut off in 2 or 3 bolt holes where the transmission hooks up to the rear housing are a terriffic help in the aligning thing. For that price if everything else is strong on the machine I think it is a steal.

depends what is actually blown in the tranny will determin the cost of fixing...is it just a bearing that went and all you'll need is a rebearing reseal kinda thing or is it like a planetary gear went and now your into hard parts.

I was talking about the newer D4C. This one obviously is a direct drive. I would say if you have the books, both parts and service manual, which should be available if you don't have them, machinerytrader.com parts section should be able to help you in either used, new old stock or maybe aftermarket parts. If you buy it, good luck with her.

Fixing that blown tranny will most likely cost more than the original cost of the machine. You don't give a serial number and that would narrow down what the machine actually is. If memory serves right it is a torque converter machine with a power shift transmission. Since both components run the same oil pulling one means pulling and overhauling both. A "C" model is an older machine and I would expect those two components to be worn out which brings into play what else on the machine is worn out. The undercarriage is the big item. If the tracks are about to fall off and the bottom roller flanges are running on the track pins bosses, that machine is ready for the scrap pile. Engines in those machines were 3204s which were not long lived and kicked out copious amounts of blow by as they started showing age. In my mind I wouldn't consider that machine a steal unless it was given to me. Good Luck!

if its a d4c series 3 it will have a 3046 engine in it not the 3204.

The machine I'm looking at is 1988 model.I'm not sure whats in it for a tranny. The ad says the undercarrage is in good shape yet and it runs fine, so I'm not sure what to do.Father in law is a heavy equipment mechanic so labout wont be too bad

I know prices are different in Canada, but there is a 1988 D4C for sale in Texas for $11,000 with 3,000 hours, winch, etc. http://www.machinerytrader.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=7036083

Like dsichewski said, the repair costs would really depend on what's wrong with the trans. With that said, the base price for new Cat bearings, seals and labor would be approximately $5500. Assuming there is no major failure, (where somebody drove it until it completely stopped moving instead of stopping when they heard a lot of noise or when they discovered a ton of metal in the screens) it shouldn't be much more than that. If you're looking to keep cost down, we offer what we call a "reseal" option for an average of 40% less than a standard rebuild, but it really depends on whether or not your bearings and seals are reusable. Resealed components are completely torn down, reassembled, and dyno-tested just like our rebuilds, but are put together using parts just beneath the high-quality standards we put on a "top-shelf" rebuild. If you have no idea what the condition of the trans is, (which you probably wouldn't because it's an auction) a safe route to go might be with an exchange transmission. At least this way you're price is capped. Unfortunately, D4C transmissions (rebuilt with Cat parts/dyno-tested/1 year warranty) are selling for about $7,500 exchange and i don't know of any available in Canada so shipping/customs to and from the USA might end up costing more than you'd hoped. :beatsme Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about any of these options.
