Cat d4g, engine runs but will not move

davejames2805 · 2016-05-28 13:08

Need some help/inputs before calling Cat dealer. My D4G with 680 hrs was running fine until 2 days ago. Backed out of cover and moved approximately 80 feet and stopped moving just like if park button was depressed. Getting trouble codes 261(Accel Switch), 262 (Deaccel Switch) and 255 (position sensor, F N R). Removed covers, cleaned etc and found no rat chewed up wires. This is a 2005 D4G, model # 3046, Serial #MHK04185. Any inputs appreciated. Is this something that I possibly can fix or only can be done by dealer.

hi davejames, there should be additional numbers after the fault codes ( FMI) they tell us how that circuit failed. as for whether you can resolve these faults your, depends on your own ability, time constraints and access to basic tooling. there is plenty of knowledge on this site to be able to assist you Mark

hi, the serial number quoted is for the engine the machine serial number is HYD00757 with a 13/05/2004 build date also how did you access the fault codes ET or removing the termination plug on the harness mark

hi,just a couple of basic checks to get you started check that you have 10V at the 6 pin connector at joystick on pin #1 and 4, if not check for 10V at ECM pin #69. also check that you have continuity between pins 2 and 5 on the 6 pin connector and pin # 70 at the ECM Also check that pin #4 has good contact to machine ground

Welcome to the Forums BSC! Glad to have you. First off post a serial # so the mechanics on HEF can determine which specific version D4G you have. Second check the voltage on the batteries and what the alternator is putting out. It should be around 14.4 volts. I have a D5G that I bought new in 2004 and the G series are very finicky on voltage. Low voltage either in the system can make all sorts of things go haywire. Once we had an issue where the dozer would be blading across the site and then slam to a stop. Finally checked the alternator and is was going out. Replaced alternator and went back to work. Best of luck!
