cat d5b starting problems

skjj ยท 2016-07-25 13:13

Would it hurt to add a small amount of diesel to the intake . To see if it helps d5b engine to start. Ive tried starting fluid but cant get it to start. Glo plugs do not work. I am getting fuel to the top of the injectors. Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

IMHO if starting fluid won't light the fires then diesel (which is much less volatile) surely won't....

Is it smoking while cranking? Should be pushing lots of white smoke if it is actually getting past the nozzle. As I recall that is probably a scroll metering system. Can someone confirm if one of those will let fuel flow out the fitting on top of the pump for the injector lines if you just pump the primer pump without cranking the engine. I'm thinking that there is no delivery valve at that point like say a Robert Bosh pump would have. Seem to recall if checking timing by port closure method all you needed to do on a Cat is supply air at a low pressure to the fuel inlet and stick the other end of a line from the #1 fitting in a jar of clean fuel and watch for the bubbles to stop. My point is that even if fuel is flowing out of the top of the injector pump the pump may not be building pressure while cranking. I know how I would have tested for that back in the day. Just grab a good used injector from a MACK and connect it to the pump with a spare line from some other engine. Actually did just that sort of thing tying to prove there was a problem with a "rebuilt" pump on a 3306. That time used two spare injectors and fuel line off a Mack engine. Started up the 3306 on 4 cylinders and used a couple coffee cans to catch the fuel coming from the Mack injectors. One would put a couple inches of fuel in to its can and the questionable one only a fraction of an inch. And yes for any safety guys out there we were very careful to not get bare hands near the nozzles while holding the cans.

d5b starting problems. Yes that bothers me. Im not seeing the white smoke when it turns over. It does have the 3306 engine. And im not sure which hand primer. I didnt know how much pressure it took to get the fuel through the injectors. Thanks for your reply.

sounds like your shut off selinoid may not be working

Okay then no white smoke means no fuel getting into cylinders so put the starting fluid away it's not going to run till you fix the fuel problem. For starters how about the S/N? Quick look on SIS shows at least a dozed different prefixes for D5B. Next question, has this machine ever run recently? Or is it something that you never saw before two days ago? Why don't glow plugs work? Bad switch, bad wires? Even if you get fuel problem solved you do need to fix the glow plugs or you will ruin the engine or something else trying to start with out glow plugs working. Not even sure if this machine has a shut-down solenoid. Or is it one of the older designs that you stop engine by pulling back on governor control, wait a dozer it is when pushing the hand control forward right? Could be a linkage problem not letting something move far enough?

One question though, before digging too deep into the fuel system. When you spray starting fluid into the air intake does the engine appear to be trying to start, even though it doesn't actually run..? If it does pop and bang with starting fluid at least you have compression. I agree with Ken, some of the basics (like the glow plugs) need fixing before you really bugger something up. A machine Serial Number would also help some of our experts to find technical information regarding your exact machine. Depending on S/N you could have a machine dating from the early 70's to as late as 1990. Obviously a few things changed in that time.

The D5B has the interim Injector pump fitted that can be stopped with the key or on the hand control if wired for key stop, it's common to see D5's stop on the hand control though, the usual issue is the fuel lift pump that bolts to the side of the injector pump failed, this is not the hand primer pump that is mounted above the filter. tctractors

d5b starting. problems I will get the sriel number asap. This isd my 3rd summer to use this machine and it has started fine on starting fluid the previous 2 springs. The last i ran it was oct. 2015. I tried to start it around march this year, but had battery problems. When i got that resolved, i found i had this problem. I have never used the glo plugs on the dozer, as starting fluid has worked till this year. One reply mentioned taking a mack injector and seeing if the pump was pushing fuel to the bottom of the injectors. We have an old ford dump truck we r parting out which has a cat diesel engine. Could i use one of its injectors to try this with?? I appreciate. All the info.

Well if this has run okay before I'm thinking the first thing I might try would be to disconnect the linkage at the pump and see if there is a definite click in and out when moving from run to shut down positions. Still don't know for sure if this one has a shut down solenoid, are there any wires hooked to anything on the pump? Forget if you mentioned if you had removed filters and made sure there was fuel in the tank and any fuel valves were turned on. Not trying to be a smart *** but without being there some of the simple things need to be checked and confirmed. Not being there to hear how it sounds while cranking over or see things first hand can make a simple diagnosis a real challenge.
