Cat D6c 10k torque converter inlet pressure is 0

JjmF · 2023-10-06 20:57

Cat has not been started for 5 years started it yesterday barely moves. Put it in forward engine pulls down a little, drive line between torque and trans slows down but doesn’t stop cat move very slow. Pump pressure 290 psi torque converter inlet 0 psi. I cleaned up the main valve and added shims to both spools, pump pressure went up to 330 psi as expected. Torque converter inlet still 0 psi. Any idea what could be happening?

Might want to try the sequence relief valve next.

This is where I tested torque converter inlet pressure that reads 0 psi before and after I added shims

Here is a layout of the transmission hydraulic system. This should help with understanding.

Thank you this is very helpful any ideas why no torque converter inlet pressure?

Remember that pressure is resistance to flow. If very little oil is making it through the sequence valve it won’t show much pressure. This is because the torque converter isn’t a dead end. There is a path in and out of the converter for cooling it. I guess rather than pressure tapping the converter inlet you should just check for flow with a hose into a bucket while cranking. If you have good flow then we need to find why there is no resistance to it. Is a seal blown apart? Is the torque converter outlet pressure regulator stuck open. I don’t suspect these because there should still be some pressure, just not zero.

The pressure relief valve serves the steering clutches and transmission clutches first. Pressure that is relieved goes to the torque converter inlet. If your not getting pressure to the torque converter either the inlet relief valve is stuck or flow is being robbed by the steering clutch or transmission circuits.

Did you get it going? My 10K won’t move at all and looks like somebody helped themselves to my service manuals

Anybody have a pdf parts book on a D6c Im trying to figure out my transmission pump issue? I’d like to see the transmission pump and pump drive components.

There are 24 different Parts Manuals for D6C tractors. For 10K prefix alone there are three different manuals depending on the Serial Number. So to narrow it down needs your particular tractor S/N.

Hey Nige, mine is 10K12186, is there an online resource? Can anyone access the cat system or do you need a dealer code?

To access SIS online you would need a login provided by a dealer. For your machine 10K12186 the appropriate Parts Manual is SEBP1085 for machines with Serial Number 10K11940-Up. Here's one on eBay for less than $50.
