Cat D6D 4×4 tranny fluid pumps into engine

sbuilders244 ยท 2013-04-24 12:23

Hey everyone, new here and already needing help. My older 6D is pumping transmission fluid into the engine. Seems to be around a gallon an hour. Any suggestions to what is causing this. Thanks in advance.

only one place trans fluid can go into engine on a 6c/d and its rear crankshaft seal. gotta pull torque converter and flywheel and replace the rear seal. Assume you did a typo error trans is 3x3. But even if its gear drive is the same story, c/s seal, just the words change pull clutch then flywheel

At that rate it must be a powershift and I suspect the torque housing is flooding. Could use a bit more checking before wrenching starts. Later Bob

The 4x4 is the serial #, It is a powershift transmission. Had a mechanic change the rear seal 200 hours ago, didn't solve the problem. The old seal was worn out. We thought we had it fixed, but in a few hours I knew better. But he may have not gotten it in without messing it up. Thanks, Looks like we check it out a little closer. Jeff

I don't think he messed up anything more than was wrong Jeff. Take the drain plug out of the torque housing, put a 5 gal pail inside of a large bucket(1/3 of 45gal barrel) under the drain hole. Start the machine and stall the torque for one minute, shut down and check the oil in the bucket. Torque stall is full throttle, 3rd gear and brakes on. If things are good there should be 2 gal in the pail but I suspect you will have both buckets full. Come on back for the next step. Later Bob

Bob, it has been raining here a lot lately. Haven't gotten to stall it out yet. We did this the last time we changed the seal out. The bucket only had 2 gallons roughly. If it fills both up does that mean I have a bad scavenger pump? Try to get the machine into the shop soon, don't like to work on it in the field. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff, if it puts more than 2 gal in the 5 gal pail the torque is leaking too much oil into the case. Now we need to determine why. There is a main relief valve and a torque inlet valve in one body on the upper LH of the torque case. Have to rule that out before pulling the torque. If the torque inlet valve is leaking it will flood the case. Later Bob

I don't want to hijack another's tread and am starting my own about a similar problem. Would like for you to review and comment.

When we went into the engine, we found out that we were out of tolerance at the thrust bearing. Thankful that was all it was.

How much out of tolerance was the thrust? Did you drop the pan and replace the thrust plates? There might be some issues with the torque, if so the internal pressure can take the thrust plate out. Later Bob

It was 70 thousandths. Mechanic thought someone had installed the wrong one before. Think he got it to 12 thousandths.

That's a lot but not likely terminal. When you take the torque back out have it checked over. The insides vary from one to another but most have the converter retained not floating in and out. Later Bob

I thank you are overlooking the trans pump it and hyd pump both pull off flywheel in fywheel housing . Have had hyd oil go in motor and ruin bearings in motor on 10k 6c have also had trans oil in motor and had the bearing in gear they mate with to make you think valve droped or bearing in motor was going out .
