Have got a Cat D6H and have a problem with my transmission pump seizing up! Done the torque converter and the transmission and checked the suction line but still they keep on seizing up! Original replacement Cat pump lasted 40 hrs and then replaced the pump with two aftermarket ones, one lasted 12hrs and the other one 15 hrs!
Post a Serial Number please. There must be 30 or so different models of D6H. It would be nice to know exactly which one you have. Before or after the pumps started seizing.? If your tractor has a powershift transmission the pump will have 3 sections. Which one is seizing.?
serial no 4LG01090 keeps seizing at the feed stage!
What exactly did you do.? Full overhaul or something else.? Did the pumps start seizing before or after the transmission and/or torque converter intervention.? Can you give some sort of time line as to how the failures occured.
After the original pump seized we did a complete torque converter overhaul, and when the cat replacement pump failed after about 40 hours we did a complete transmission overhaul thinking that the problem might be there! That pump lasted only15hours before it packed up! Did then a complete suction check and could not see anything wrong, installed another pump and that one lasted only 12hours
How many total hours on the machine.? Do you know if the first seized pump was original.? What Part Number of pump are you installing.? Was the torque converter original until the recent overhaul.? You mean the transmission charging section on the RH side of the illustration below.? I guess the shaft bushes seizing is what is locking up the pump. But are the gears #14 & #15 also chewing into the end plates of the pump section.? If so on which side, right or left as you look at the illustration.? Can you post some photos of the damaged pump internals.?
bet me to it, my guess is the drive coupling is seized and preloading the pump.
I must admit that the pump being preloaded was my first thought.
I wonder what the drive adapter with the bearing and seal in it that bolts on the front of the pump looks like? Has it been changed or inspected. I don’t think it comes with the pump. Is there possibly a restriction in the line out of the pump causing high pressure.
will open it up next week and come back to you guys with my findings! Anyone here the can tell me where to find a owner and service manual for this machine?
The complete service manual comes in two parts. One contains Specifications, SysOp, T&A, & schematics, the other contains the Disassembly & Assembly section. Search the usual internet marketplaces for Caterpillar Publication references SENR3235 & SENR8315. A complete service manual should also contain a copy of the Operation & Maintenance Manual, which I assume is what you are referring to as an "owners manual" (in other words the slim one that fits in the pocket behind the seat.)
I see the pump has a splined drive. How is that drive coupled? It is reasonably well known that introducing a new splined drive to an old worn splined coupling drive will preload a pump resulting in early failure.
Ok, opened the original CAT pump and this is what it looks like on the inside!
some more!
Hi. Before the pump jammed, did you observe an increase in the oil temperature in the transmission? I have exactly the same problem, the pump worked for 50 hours and jammed. The pump is manufactured by China "ITR". Before the pump failed, I observed an increase in transmission temperature. Most likely this is the reason.
any suggestions what the cause could be? Already changed 3 pumps, one was a ITR make the other one was a CRP make and the one in the photo is a original CAT pump!
It's dififcult to see exactly from your photos, but is the gear that is seizing up against the backplate of the housing located on the driving shaft (top arrow) or the driven shaft (bottom arrow) of the pump.? Questions: 1. When the pump is installed does it butt up to the transmission housing easily, or does it "hang off" by a millimetre or so and have to be pulled into final position by tightening the mounting bolts.? 2. Has anyone checked the shaft that drives the pump for side play, end play, or any other sort of abnormal movement.?
That pump shaft was excessively preloaded. It got hot enough to discolour the input shaft and bur the pump gear.
