Cat D8N Transmission issues

tbone1471 ยท 2022-11-06 19:59

We have been having some issues with the trans heating up while pushing. It also feels a little weak. Recently noticed a very small amount of sludge around the dipstick. Somewhat like coolant is the trans. We also noticed the same in the radiator but much worse. Is it possible for coolant to get into the transmission? We also had a radiator core start leaking last week and since we will have to dismantle it I want to make sure we don't over look anything. 9TC02802

The power train oil cooler would be the obvious location. When the machine is running the oil cooler circuit might have 20-30psi of pressure in it so that would overcome the 10psi or so in the cooling system and put oil in the radiator. When the machine is stopped warm there would be no pressure in the oil system but still 10psi or so in the cooling system until the machine cools down, so that could easily push a small amount of coolant into the transmission. The cooler core could be removed and pressure tested to check for leakage while you have the radiator disassembled.

Do you have a part number for the power trains oil cooler? The dealer has sent a few but said the machine is too old and sis is not specific on what it is... I think the rad core is 7E-9595 1W-0289 was the first cooler picture they sent. I think this matches the cooler between the engine and radiator but it is an air cooled, not water.

What I found before (illustration above) is a 166-8598 - Reman 10R-4668. Does the existing cooler have any numbers either cast into it or an a tag so that you can confirm that Part Number.? That's the hydraulic system oil cooler FFS, not the powertrain oil cooler.......!!

By machine Serial Number SIS is not specific which radiator assembly is in your particular Serial Number and there are multiple versions to choose from. Starting from the 6Y-0966 Merchandise Gp took me to the 7T-2506 General Arrgt for the tractor. Within 7T-2506 is a 4W-9498 Installation Arrgt, and within that Arrgt is a 1W-0148 Radiator Gp. The Core Part Number for that Radiator is a 2W-5540. See attachment.
