Cat/Perkins Turbo Charged 3054

I have a Cat 416C, about 8000hrs, and twice it has had a broken exhaust valve rod and bent intake valve rod on cylinder 1 (front of the engine). First time it happened was my fault, over use of ether to cold start, then rod broke later in the day while driving to work. Second time the machine was most of the way through warming up, idling at 1200. The engine was making oil and burning blue. The cylinder walls 2-4 look good, 1 has a bit of very light vertical scratching across the original honing marks. I think the Stanton fuel injector pump is the source of the oil/fuel mixing, with fuel getting into the pan and oil getting to the atomizers. Got an inframe rebuild kit, changing pistons, rings, liners, bearings, atomizers, valves. Opted to leave the cam alone, rocker arm rod sockets and tappet sockets look good. Rebuilding the injector pump. Has anyone experienced this rod problem before and hazard a guess at the source?
