caterpillar 301.8 final drive pipe location

dylantl ยท 2013-05-24 15:27

Hello all. The final drive was removed from the machine before identifying which pipe went where. We have found that forward is the top hose reverse is the second can someone please fill in the gaps of the other two? Thanks in advance Dylan

I would think they are return lines, if the fluid comes in, it has to go back out.

If you'd like to supply a Serial Number and an e-mail address I'll mail you a copy of the Parts Manual page showing where all the travel motor hoses go.

Serial no 5DW08144 and an e mail address " [email protected] " without the brackets. Thanks Dylan

5DW08144 is actually your engine Serial Number - the machine Serial Number is BFA03187. But no worries, check your e-mail.

Go to my link below under "Motor Connections" A 4 line hook up consists of: Forward Reverse Case Drain Two Speed If you've identified and connected the Forward and Reverse, and are unsure which is the case drain and two speed. You can blow air up the lines and whichever one creates bubbles in the hydraulic tank is your case drain. It is also the "middle sized" line. The smallest line is normally the 2 speed line. It is critical that you install these two lines correctly. Incorrect installation will cause catastrophic damage!

The final drive will be back with me soon and I am still none the wiser as to where the pipes go, as I said at the start we have identified the pipes as to forward and return and to which I think is the two speed hose. So I hope someone can tell me from a picture, but this is the right side looking forward and from the schematic from CAT dealer the 90degree elbow is on top. So still confused.

sorry that photo needs to be rotated 90 degrees Thanks Dylan

Did you go to my website and read about motor connections? http://www.finaldrivecenter.com/PartsPorts.htm From your photo: *and current angle* Far left is Forward Next is Reverse Next is Case Drain (aka Return to tank) Far right with elbow is two speed line

The 2 Final Drives are both piped exactly the same, therefore if you're in between the tracks under the machine looking towards the final drive the 2-speed line (the one with the 90-deg connection on it) will be on top on one side of the machine and on the bottom on the other side. From the photo I see that 3 of the 4 lines (forward, reverse, & 2-speed) still have the aluminium tags on them, maybe the 4th one does also. Those tags will carry the Cat Part Number. Marry the numbers from the tags (try not to remove them from the hoses otherwise they tend to get lost) up with the Part Numbers shown on the Parts Manual I sent to you showing the hoses and you should be laughing. If you remove the case drain line and blow through it with the tank cap removed from the hydraulic tank you should be able to hear air bubbling into the tank. The line for 2-speed is obvious, it's the one with the 90-deg fitting on the end. Once the case drain & 2-speed lines have been identified you're home free. All that crossing up the Forward & Return lines can do is have one track going one direction when the other track is going the opposite way. Solution - change the 2 hoses over ..... but it won't break anything if you get it wrong the first time of asking. FWIW I agree with Finaldrive.

Yes I did read the link above but most of that was for modern machines and return was the top hose as in c1,c2 so confusing me even more. Thanks for your patient answers.
