hi all could anyone offer any help we have a cat 950f series 11 we had to start with issues with the backup alarm switched earth giving intermittent connection to the backup alarm and reverse lamps we have checked the input earth to the shifter and the output earth brown 321 wire all seems ok we have removed the shifter from the shovel and pulled it apart not much to see so refitted to shovel we have know got issues with it only having 3rd gear it will go fowords and backwards in 3rd gear but 1,2,4th gears will not work and do not show on the screen infront of the steering wheel please note that we had some welding work done on the cab around this time and the welder didn't isolate the batterys so I'm a little concerned about this possible damage to the trans ecm unit behind the drivers seat any help would be gratefully recieved thanks James
Start from the beginning with a Serial Number. It always helps to know what we are dealing with. Does the SERV CODE icon/indicator on the panel under the tachometer stay illuminated after the instrumments complete their self-test when you first turn on the keyswitch..? Do you have a digital multimeter to do electrical diagnostics..? Because you're likely going to need one. If welding was done without disconnecting the batteries be prepared for the worst ......... did he at least turn off the master switch..? Don't take this the wrong way but please try to write using some punctuation. Full stops and capital letters help a bunch in understanding what you have written. I had to read your OP about half a dozen times before I could actually make sense of what you had written.
Is that any better Nige?
So you removed the shift box, reinstalled it and now you have gears that don't work? Kind of sounds like it didn't get put back together properly, something was actually wrong in the box or you have a wiring harness problem that was made worse when you took the box off the column. I've also had problems with the harnesses on smaller Cat loaders where they come out the back of the cab and down into the transmission.
