I am looking at a Caterpillar D8K, the serial number they show is 66V5245, I thought D8K' where 77V numbers. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob
66V is power shift built in UK 76V is direct drive built in US 77V is power shift built in US
Thank You, now my next question Nige and the Boys from Great Briton, how much different are the two machines? Are parts interchangeable or am I buying someone else's problem? Thanks, Bob
The Tractor is identical 66V=77V the only thing that is different is the numbers on the plate, it's common to find engines and large components from the U.S. in D8's here, Yank built has no sway on our rock, but it might be a thought for you to go hunt out a 77V series K and keep things American. tctractors
Thank you, I thought they where the same, I very much appreciate the input. Bob
I was allways under the impression that US built 77V's were better built than our UK built 66V's
We had a UK built D6D I think it was we purchased used, never had any unusual issues with it.
Good afternoon for all, Mr. Old Magnet, I'd like to ask you if serial numbers you inform locations on D8-K are the same for D8-H. See below the image you sent some years ago. HeavyEquipmentForums In case of having no more plates, is there any marked number on the own chassi? Where? Thanks a lot Paulo
We found a plate in this D8 H written 28H6464. Does anybody know if is possible to know year and likely series of this D8 H? Thanks
Something more to help: Plate above (28H6464) is probably from hydraulic control but it was not on the correct place - see picture. Engine has a raised number on the block: GN5887 - see picture Engine has only one fuel filter (it seems that it is inside an aluminium cup) - see picture. Thanks again

28H6464 is the Hydraulic Control s/n that would originally have been found on D8H tractors s/n 36A51106-up (1968-up) or 46A19392-up (1969-up) If tags are missing scrape the tag location and look for stamped number in that location. Check that block casting number again. I believe it should read 6N5387 which is a D342 spacer plate engine casting number. Spacer plate engines didn't come in until the D8K's (77V series) introduced in 1977 at engine s/n 17S8944-up Could be you have a D8H with engine transplant. To check, spacer plate engines use head bolts, non-spacer plate used studs and nuts.
Mr. Old Magnet You solve the problem. Chassi is at least a 36A and year around 1968, and has probably 270 hp , at least. However considering the possibility of being a transplant from a D8K, it goes to about 300 hp. This engine in fact seems to have a casting number 6N5387. Fuel filter (single and inside a cup) does indicate anything? Could be the block changed by a new one and the accessories from the old one? Thank you very much for the information you provide. RDS Paulo
The single spin on element engine oil filter is correct for a 77V engine s/n 17S8944-up D8H's used two cartridge type engine oil filters. The single cartridge fuel filter is for a D8H, the 77V uses a dual spin on element fuel filter. Your tractor if D8H is a 46Axxxx series unit (power shift). 36A's are direct drive.
Paulo, take a look at the back side of the tractor chassis (bevel gear case) for a Serial Number. Usually it will be stamped in the same location as the plate should have been, even if the plate has long gone. You may have to get in there with paint remover to find it. Best of luck.
Thanks again Mr. Old Magnet for the complements and for the valuable information. RDS
Good afternoon Mr. Nige, As you mention, it's quite possible that this D8 was painted and repainted several times and for this reason number is not visible. I'm going to check the place you informed and return for all. Thank you very much. Paulo
Paulo, good morning. Your D8 has a bit of a mix of an engine. It's a non spacer plate motor that appears to have fitted an older style fuel pump. The tranny pump appears to be a later style upgrade constant prime affair, with the canister spin on oil filter and later style transmission filter assembly. It also has the later style air filter set up as well. The spin on oil filter was available for mid series 68A and 46A D8H's and was carried through to the very end of the 77V and 66V production until 1982. It's quite common to mix and match lumps.
My d8k is a 66v number its a wonderful machine On the side of the hard nose is a tag says Caterpillar made Peoria illinois and on the left rear side of the machine is another metal tag says certified rebuild Zepplin Caterpillar 1990 We have owned this tractor since 1994
