Do you know what year or series it is? It likely has a Gearco 8400 transmission. Apparently the trans. can act up if it isn't receiving enough volts. It should have 13 and preferably closer to 14 to operate properly. The trans. will throw some codes that show up on the shift indicator display but they can be very hard to read. Most codes are for open circuit or short circuit of solenoids. The display will show an E followed by a 2 digit code. This is for series 2 and series 3 machines. I'm not sure if there are more codes for later models. If it was in 4th gear, it could have been in limp mode due to electronic failure. There will be a very faint red glow that you need to shield from direct light in order to see. Limp mode only works in 4th gear forward and 1st gear reverse. The pulser lever won't work.

It's common for the display to be very hard to read. My 730A with a cummins started in less than half a second after sitting since last Oct. or Nov.

Have you any manuals on them?
