considerations: in agriculture, which is better a crawler tractor or a crawler bulldozer?

hi, I happened to see in large, very extensive agricultural lands, especially stony ones, that instead of the classic tracked tractors, the farmers use large tracked shovel loaders to which they hook up at the rear plows or other agricultural devices or large tracked bulldozers like old caterpillars or old fiat allis. what do you think of this solution when it is better to use the classic tractor or earthmoving machines set up for agricultural use? thank you. https://youtu.be/FTnIrAZ_2Eo fiat ad7 e Landini trekker 105 Aratura dell'Amicizia 2016 [All cingoli Fiat 55C,60C,AD7,605C,555C,505C,455C] Buongiorno tutti!!!Aratura dell' Amicizia 2016 presso la famiglia Calabrese Jonni .Mezzi in azione: Fiat 55C,60C,AD7,605C,555C,505C,455C. Well, i´m a farmer so i also use a buldozer for agricultural purposes... Lets see if i can share some light ... When thinking in Agriculture, one got to divide the activity into 2 categories, industrial farming and traditional farming. Industrial farming, is always profitable, as this is done mostly by Agri Specialized Groups and managed by professionals , at finance level and at technical level. This companies usually use contractors with construction machines regularly either construct the fields, deep plowing, drain systems , watering systems , decompaction, reclamation and so on, and this contractors often go for a D8H to pull a plow instead of big tracked JD cause this machine does not work the all year round and is much more cheap to buy and maintain, also it is also capable of pulling the plow and the JD altoguether... my case is a family farm , very small with very limited income, so a aged D5H is there to pull a disk harrow over rough brush 50H a year at most and to maintain roads, borrow to naighbours and so on... as a farm tractor does not stand this use. imagine just the cost of punctured tires or broken parts if was to use to use my JD conventional tractor to drive over stony terrain or tick brush...

Not a lot of tracked construction crawlers used in agriculture around here for farming. Some rubber tracked farming equipment, but mostly large dual wheel tractors do that type work. Ground reclamation and soil restoration are different operations than agriculture production which the ground is returned to from both strip, and deep shaft coal mining operations. The maintenance and upkeep costs of tracked machines took them out of farming operations long ago around here, but they still find usage in ancillary and/or support roles. Most medium to large farm operations have a bulldozer of some sort easily available and many have older excavators also. Always a ditch or waterway needing attention of some sort.

and just to confuse the issue more ^^^ I am seeing some local contractors using large (350 hp) articulated farm tractors, set on rubber tracks (Case) pulling earthmoving pans. They claim the hourly rate is lower.

As a kid growing up in a rural farm community, everyone farmed with conventional rubber tire tractors. Except for one guy, my great uncle. He would ONLY ever own or use a crawler. His theory was a rubber tire tractor would work most of the time but occasionally get stuck in the mud and also you cant cleanout brush and fence rows with a rubber tire tractor. He felt that a crawler was a better "one tool does it all" option. Also look at the soil compaction comparation between a rubber tire tractor and a crawler, the crawler is hands down the better option.

Another thing to consider when making a decision one which to use is this... does your farm consist of one piece of land or multiple piece spread out over a broad area, it's not really practical or feasible to move a tractor long distances without having extra equipment to do that, especially if you don't have any reason other than to move the dozer to have that extra equipment. Although this doesn't answer your original question, it brings up another one worth consideration.

Ever heard of that saying "If it doesn't have tracks, it lacks."? Probably not........I just made it up

what would be the difference between a crawler tractor, a classic bulldozer and a crawler loader, just in terms of practical configuration and set-up even if the starting point is always the crawler tractor, how the various machinery behaves, such as traction performance, speed, maneuverability, stability and car trim? what evident substantial differences we can notice based on the distribution of weights, masses and forces that act, perhaps the bulldozer and the mechanical loader are more stressed, the tractor basically pulls and trolls the bulldozer pushes. am I wrong as a deduction? I discovered the hot water?

first and most importantly a crawler loader is a special machine with no track oscillation, so it can lift up a load and not flop over on it's side. Those track frames are rigid and are not as effective as tracks that can conform to the ground a bit. Not everything a farm tractor does is drawbar work. The farm dozers have a standard PTO for implements. The construction dozer does not.

sorry for the trivial question, but agricultural tractors can be transformed into bulldozers by hooking up a special frame with blade, arms and lifter, I really wanted to understand what the difference was between the 2 machines and how it reacted to the various forces and stresses, sorry for the trivial question. Thank you. I saw that the bulldozer has a supporting frame welded on its tractor while on the classic tractor it could be hooked like a removable prosthesis APRIPISTA per trattrici cingolate angeloni renaioli.net Lame Apripista L’esperienza e la tecnologia Sigma 4 si combinano nella realizzazione di una linea di evolute lame apripista per trattrici cingolate. Humm, u´re not close ... Tracked machines were developed from the need of staying afloat on the fields weather they were construction or agriculture... as the weeled models of tractors were very incipient and were prone to bogging and roll over... the tracks came to change all this , as tracked machine has a much lower ground pressure for unit area, and much more resilient to roll over as CG is very low. In the begining AG and IND type track tractors were much alike, then manufacturers realized the could make a change, building much lighter and less resilient to wear tractors for AG purposes as they would spend their life puling a plow, or other implements and the light version of this machine came to life. IND tractors with time went beeing equipeed with cuting tools for soft ground , then came the need of cutting hard soil, then rock, rippers were added , blades robusted , weight added to both turn the machine heavy for holding on ground and for robustness. armour were implemented to protect against rocks , or other items that could damage the integrity. Power trains were developed to last the rigour of working years and years. In the 2000´s this were long set, AG tractors were mainly wheeled in the several versions u can find today. Some companies still offer tracked AG tractors for specific AG areas and jobs that can be equipeed with blades and rippers, but they are not able to resist in the rigour of a construction environment. IND machines went the road to become even more resilient to the rigours of day to day construction sites, therefore become inadequate for AG use. But as said previously sometimes construction is needed in AG fiels , thats when this machines apear in AG fields. and in some cases the farmers want to have a construction small machine for there own use and the opt for a used construction machine wich the adapt to farm jobs... my case. On the other hand, industrial farm tractors also pop in construction sites allover but never forguet that no decent Construction Contractor will opt by a farm tractor and a srapper pan in lieu of a Riggid Scrapper, unless he main job is only with Farm construction sites , and not heavy construction sites like roads and airports dams and so on. Today loaders either tracked or wheeled are dissapearing from construction sites or farms as this are special dedicated machines and tend to be replaced by others. A track loader can not find a purpose in any farm, and a wheeled can be easily replaced by any tractor with a load implement. even in construction sites they are dissapearing, and relegated to special jobs. wheel loaders still have their place in yards, but definetly not in the deep and hard construction site or mining as they were replaced by HYD shovels or excavators.

This is the correct information. In addition a crawler tractor for AG use has a direct drive transmission.

The choice between a crawler tractor and a crawler bulldozer in agriculture depends on specific needs and the terrain. Crawler tractors are versatile for various farming tasks, while bulldozers excel in challenging terrains and heavy-duty tasks like land clearing. Using large tracked shovel loaders or bulldozers for plowing or other devices can make sense in certain scenarios, especially on rugged or stony lands. It's about optimizing equipment for efficiency and productivity. Remember that proper maintenance is essential for all farm equipment. Don't forget about timely farm equipment repairs . They can help ensure your machines run smoothly.

Good point to highlight Tom. Are you also able to explain the difference between a dozer designed to push, and an agricultural crawler designed to pull?
