if that manlift made that collapse it was a accident waiting to happen.

Possibly, but one must consider that Genie weighs over 26,000 lbs. That's a lot more concentrated weight per wheel than the vehicle traffic that it was probably designed to handle. Pretty crazy looking scene though.

in the past we were told that an underground parking garage roof should be able to withstand the weight and loading of a fire truck ,specifically a ladder truck...buts its retro...the garage was probably designed with the type and weight of the truck's that were available at the time the garage was built.. age plays an important factor to...rock salt is a heavily used substance in the winter months ..rotting rebar and weakening the concrete ..in the old building i i lived in the the garbage pickup got moved simply because the roof was considered to old and weak to support the garbage truck.... Heat..there is a heat wave there right now ..after suffering through two in that neck of the woods ..seeing highways heaved, and sidewalk panels pushed up ..its plausible the the expansion of the garage roof caused alot of stress in it ..the genie was the last straw..those old garages often have dirt and weeds in the old expansion joints ..nobody thinks to clean them out every now and then .. back in the day that garage may have been more than able to support that genie..but Mother nature doesn't take a day off ..father time just keeps picking away .. I know the way things work in Ontario with safety inspectors ..Im willing to bet my bottom dollar that an engineering consultation will have to be considered and done before any work starts on or around a parking garage..more legislation to get passed into law And then like Atco said..that much weight on a foot print ..which is essentially as big as a Honda..drastically increases the load psi on the given area ..

ATCO I agree, but you know 'A good crane operator isn't expensive, he's priceless! as well.
