Crane topples in Regina injuring 2 CBC News Two people suffered minor injuries in a crane accident in Regina Wednesday morning. (CBC) A worker was taken to hospital in Regina Wednesday morning after a crane toppled over, briefly pinning him under a heavy beam. The man, who was not identified, sustained non life-threatening injuries. Another worker was injured in the mishap but was not taken to hospital. The accident occurred in Regina's industrial zone, in the northeast part of the city. Lee Eady, from the head office of Prairie West Technical Services, told CBC News that his company was able to help rescue the man by using a forklift to remove the beam. Eady said the crane, owned by another company, was picking up a piece of machinery his firm had been working on when the accident happened. "The guys were loading it up," Eady explained. "They were putting the main beam back on top and apparently a pin wasn't in place properly is what we think so far." No one from the crane company would comment on what happened.

Reading the article it's not real clear what happened until you look at the picture. They dropped the jib off the side of the crane while stowing it. Its easy to do if you have people working with you that aren't familiar with the crane. When the jib gets stowed or erected on a crane I'm running, I'm the one that checks all the pins and plugs. The ironworkers and carpenters throw a fit about me getting in and out of the cab, but all of the jibs are different, and its supprisingly easy to have these kinds of accidents happen. Thats 2500 lbs of iron in that swing-away jib, and falling 10' off the side of the main boom doesn't do it, or anyone under it any good. Those guys are really lucky no one was seriously injured or killed.

Stock ..I think yer right .. Theres only one pin on a forward connection that holds it in place as not to run of the ramp ..and..In my own personal experience with these Grove jib's its almost a bullet proof system ..however ..the unit when its new the jib stowing bracket bolts should be checked and retightend regularly .. In the pic the front stowage braket which ressembles a knife ..isnt there....the rear stowage bracket is bent down ....

I've alway checked the pins, cables, clamps & etc... even look at the book a couple of times... 200+ ft of boom & jib is scary enough all by itself. But if something not right then things happen quickly.. Bobby the carpenter may want forms set, but he's going to wait until I've looked over the jib & etc. Scariest jib install I've done.... the 100' of lattice on a grove 80 ton.. I had to back the crane up a slight hill . set the crane up . built the jib over the side ... only place with enough length.. then wobble down the hill with about 120' sticking straight up. It had pucker power...

Ive run the same Grove ...wouldnt try it with a newer 80 ..but those old girls had more than enough will to get around with that on ..I shifted gears going through a parking lot

When did this happen? Amazing that no one was critically injured.

How many times have you let the carpenter erect/stow the jib and jerk the wires from the two block plug? It's easier to just climb down and double check things.

Regina accident Man is that ever a crumby accident. Just miss one step in the sequence and off it goes.... As much as I believe that Grove, Tadano and Liebherr have come a long way in there jib attachment methods over the years, I actually enjoy the Terex RT's method. a. retract main boom fully; b. pin jib to main boom; c. release jib lock; and d. scope out main boom with jib attached; and e. swing on jib and pin left side. Of course move the hoist cable at the appropriate time but at least there is no discussion about when to deploy a jib ramp or release a lock pin. Just my $0.02
