Crashed some Komatsus

rshackleford · 2009-10-30 08:55

i have some very careless operators who insist on tracking over an open trench. the trench then collapses and does a ton of sheet metal damage to the machines. i have attached a list of parts that are damaged. does anyone have some good advice on how to make these repairs? where to get the parts? thanks.

Somebody post the "this thread is worthless without pics" smiley. JK. You got pics of it, right?

Komatsu bashers Check on Machinery Trader.com under dismantled machines for used parts . Get the operators to help with repairs. Then tell them to take a flying leap into an open trench. Finally park said excavator(s) on top of trench.:canada

One thing for sure; the more beat up they get and keep looking rougher...these worthless operators are going to care even less (if that's possible) about taking care of your machines. Ain't going to be long your going to have heeps of junk burning diesel fuel. Get a quote for all the parts from a Komatsu dealer, then attach a copy with each hands paycheck the next payday to show them how many thousands (and I mean thousands) of dollars of damage they've done to your machines.

Is there some kinda' law that i'm missing that says that employee's don't have to pay for damaged equipment?:beatsme If I broke something of my employers, I would definately pay to replace it if not atleast something towards... how do these guys keep there jobs???

  6. #6dsichewski2009-10-30 23:17

Well I hope they a ) pay for the damages and b) no longer work for you...honestly..driving 3 machines over a trench...what were they thinking???? Good luck getting the repairs done....from the quick glance I got at the list luckily its allot of cosmetic damage as opposed to component damage...

How wide of a trench was it? Im new to a excavator. My family just bought a deere 490E and im just learning to run it, I dug a ditch the other day about 6 ft wide and 8 ft deep. I was able to track over it with no problem haveing less than 10 hours on an excavator. so with all that rambling i was just wondering how wide the trench was..lol

Actually, I'm sure a lot of guys would love for you to be able to point out a law that says you can make them pay for damaged equipment. I know laws differ from place to place, but to the best of my knowlege, the best an employer can do is to fire them. They can't be made to pay for the damges. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Sometimes bad things happen to good employees. I just happens. Never seen anyone fired for one accident. Damage done by carelessness is different. I've see operators fired for not greasing their machines.

Some people just don't care because it isn't there machine. As far as crossing a 6 foot trench 8 feet deep, you may not want to do that very often unless you want to end up in the bottom of it. Just my $.02.

well it may not have been a smart thing but it was kinda the case of why did the chicken cross the road. there was only one way to the other side. Im sure alot of you experienced guys cross them all the time and even turn on them after digging. I was gonna try to turn on it after i dug it but decided i would wait till i got a few more hours under my belt before i tryed that..

If you get those repairs made, maybe you should address the cause of the problem. Anybody can pick up a careless operator that will cause damage to a machine. But you mention that you have bad operator s doing damage to your machine s . Maybe you should re-visit your hiring/screening process.

it was one bucket width. these are 85,000 lbs machines. you just cant track them over any trench. they were attempting to straddle the trench. either way i have seen this happen too many times. crossing/straddling a tench is not a good practice.

we had a company meeting about some of this kind of stuff and created a company policy. we had the employees sign a paper agreeing to it. we will have to add this kind of damage to our list. things that we have a policy on: --no paychecks till ifta and mileage reports are in --no paychecks if time cards are incomplete without customer and job names --no new tools unless you trade in the broken one you are replacing otherwise you buy it yourself. i think we have a few more too.

Do your Komatsu 300's weigh 85,000 LBS? You have some extra goodies on those bad boys?

  17. #17rshackleford2009-11-01 10:21

sorry, our vovlo 330 weighs about that. i guess the 300 goes between 75-80k?

  18. #18joispoi2009-11-01 11:36

    A PC300 is a 30 metric ton machine or 66,000lbs.

  19. #19rshackleford2009-11-01 11:42

according to Komatsu's web site PC300LC-8 77,093– 79,152 lbs and when i scale one of these things i weight about 120,000 with tractor and trailer.

  20. #20joispoi2009-11-01 12:39

I stand corrected. The newer generations are heavier. I'm familiar with the -5.

  21. #21special tool2009-11-01 16:04

Also - the the new base number system assumes standard carraige? His is "LC" - this is understood to be a heavier weight option, isn't it?

  22. #22rshackleford2009-11-01 17:38

in my part of the world i have never seen a non long carriage machine.

Time to find some new operators. We has a small outfit that had three of our SK1020 skid steers loading shipping containers. Within the first week we had made three service calls per machine all due to operators beating the crap out of them. All of the operators were fired and the new batch had to take pictures of the machine they were operating before and after each shift. Ive never looked into used Komatsu parts as I work for a dealer, but hey any Komatsu dealer would be happy to have you as a customer, parts departments encourage careless operators

  24. #242stickbill2009-11-02 11:23

There is no LAW saying they have to pay either. Here you have to have a signed memo from each employee stating that it's company policy.

  25. #252stickbill2009-11-02 11:30

Guess what? Your right. Some of the Pipeline Contractors would never write a pay check if that was a law.
