cummins 6bt question

truecountry ยท 2010-09-15 21:17

earlier i posted about a cummins 6 bt that leaked oil bad at the injector pump ,, come to find out the bolts worked loose and front of pump wrked loose ... ok easy fix ,, loc tite and retighten ... ok now its burning 2 to 3 gallons a day .... my question is,,, is it possible that the seals inside injector pump are gone and its burning the oil with fuel... it smokes but not alot exhaust... lil blowby smoke too....this injector pump is common to loosen up so im asking is this common too ....

The injection pump does have some lubrication oil going though it. I haven't heard of one sending oil through injection lines, don't mean it can't happen. Thinking logically, if you were burning 3 - 4 gallons of oil a day, and wondering if the injection pump is the culprit, I would think that amount of oil loss would stain the fuel in the fuel tank a black oily color via the fuel return line. If the fuel in your tank is nice clean diesel color, I doubt the injection pump is the problem. Just a thought.

    Is it a 8.3 liter?

i havent thought of checking the fuel ... wow nice atco...no its not a 8.3 liter its a 5.9

Thats a lot of oil, gotta show up somewhere if it is not burning it.

If fuel in tank is nice and clean in color, you might want to remove the intake piping from the turbo and see if it's coated with oil from a bad seal on the turbo impeller shaft. 2 -3 gallons a day is a good bit of oil. Unlikely it's valve guide seals because intake is pressurized by turbo, could be exhaust valve guide seals, but 2-3 gal/day is a stretch for that. About the only thing left is a piston, or more that one piston, that has failed oil rings. Again, haven't seen that myself on a 4B or 6B Cummins. A compression test would not reveal a problem with oil rings. If you find fuel is clean in tank, and intake is clean (no failed impeller seal), about the only thing I can think of is piston oil rings. Typically, you can remove the exhaust manifold and clearly see an exhaust port that has been weeping excessive oil, that port will be more wet than others. Keep us informed on what you find.

So how many hours you got on this machine? How does the engine start when cold? Did you check the breather tube for oil and vapor blowing out? That much oil makes it sound like the engine has been dusted or a piston got burned when the fuel pump was loose. Those pumps can be turned a little bit each way which changes the timing. If you didn't get the pump locked down in the right place you could be hitting early or late.

If its that much oil a day and there isn't a whole lot of blow by then it's gotta be a combination of a couple things. Could be the turbo seals, injector seals, rings. Could be the head gasket too, is the antifreeze clean or is there spots of oil in it?

ok finally got to open up the engine now this is a appentice 210 loader ,,, i checked turbo , nothing .. checked fuel clean so i pulled head off and cylinders 2 and 3 had scars 1/2 way down to bottom.... boss says time to get another recon cummins ...i guess the injector pump coming apart kinda had me headed that way ... thanks guys

roughly 4000 hours , started right up cold and ran fine just burnt oil ... smoked some out breather tube .....

With scars on two adjacent cylinders I wonder if it got hot. I would hate to put a reman engine in and find out my cooling system was bad when the new motor failed. On the other hand I have seen these engines lose the fan belt which is also the water pump belt and run relatively cool for hours. Only concern was the operator complained the battery was dead. The B series is very tough.

frog farmer check this other link out about this machine..

6 gallons of oil before he gave up. I bet it needed more like 10 and scarred the cyls from lack of lubrication. Operators like that get to run a shovel when I catch em.

How many hours did it have on it? We just rebuilt an NT-855C Cummins, and when we took it apart there were no rings left on it and the cylinders were scared up like crazy. It looks like the injectors just wore out and just started pouring in as much fuel as they could. It smoked a little more than usual but it blew holes in the pistons too from the extreme heat.

D&G the engine didnt have but 3000 hours on it.... Ok i got new cummins recon today around 2 pm and at 5:30 i had it bolted in motor mounts and it should be running by lunch tomorrow if nothing else breaks down....
