Cummins missing & puffing

Brandon_M ยท 2017-09-14 20:20

Got a Dozer with a 4bt cummins in it. Was doing light grading work at my grandpas house. Today started it up & it ran maybe 2-3 minutes & started missing something awful & puffing white smoke out of the exhaust. The Dozer has been there for about 2 weeks & setting out in the rain. Today is the only day is hasn't rained in awhile. Is it possible that it's water in the fuel, maybe sucked a drug or something. I'm hoping it's just a fuel issue & nothing to major. Any help is appreciated

What does the smoke smell like? like diesel fuel or sweet like anti freeze ?

  2. #2JS3002017-09-14 20:57

Was there a rain cap on the exhaust?

  3. #3Brandon_M2017-09-14 21:01

I never noticed the smell was to tore up over it. Yes the rain cap was on the exhaust but it wasn't sealed off 100% it was bent up a little. Never noticed that until today when I was searching looking for a problem.

Could just be a stuck injector.

  5. #5Brandon_M2017-09-14 21:19

Could the rain going into the exhaust cause that? Like I said it has a rain cap but after looking I believe water was going down the exhaust pipe. Didn't know it was damaged until today

Did it start running rough well after it was started , after a 3 minute period of smooth running ? What about when it started did it seem like it had a flat battery , as water in a cylinder some times seems like a battery problem as it compress's .

Just pull & drain the fuel filters into a bucket.. IF theres water in it, it'll show up quick in the bucket.. Just somewhere to start..

Pumpguy is correct that will be the easiest place to start. We put a can over the exhaust. Started out with a flapper but they get bent to easy. I see dozers and tractors sitting around all the time with open exhaust pipes. You would think if it could hurt anything you would hear about rain in a cylinder more often.

It started fine & quick, ran good for probably 2-3 minutes. Then started missing real bad & puffing white smoke. Then I shut it down & looked engine over, tried to start it just to see, it didn't want to crank over turned real slow like it was battery was weak. After that I didn't fool with it anymore until I searched the web for answers

That sounds like coolant into a cylinder now. Have you checked coolant level? Smell at the stack for a sweet odor then report back.

  11. #11Delmer2017-09-15 11:23

Yes, sure sounds like too much water in a cylinder. If the coolant is low when you check, then drain the rest of it, turn the engine over by hand if possible until it's free, then start it and loosen the injector lines one at a time at the injector to see which ones make it sound worse (or kill it). If you're real lucky it might be just a head gasket. If the coolant isn't low, then see if it will turn over by hand, maybe the battery IS dead? Check the water separator, fuel tank drain, sediment bowl, filter, or whatever to see how much water is in the fuel. Water in the injection pump WILL make it miss and smoke.

Ok, I'll check these things & see if it ever quits raining here . I'll post tonight what I find. Thanks for the helpful info. I hope it's nothing major, this is a brand new engine in this Dozer probably doesn't have a 100 hours on it yet.

Brand new or reman? If either may be worth contacting supplier/installer.

  14. #14MrKomatsu2017-09-15 21:36

is it an old international or a dresser td7?

  15. #15MrKomatsu2017-09-15 21:39

should have a in-line filter against the frame and the inlet line should have a screen in the banjo fitting...just sayin

Ok here I go probably make some mad but here it goes. The fuel system will not put water into the engine the pump will lock up long before that happens. You probably have either a bad injector or a blown head gasket. If you can get it to start crack each injector line one at a time and see which one lessens the smoke and doesn't change the miss. You did have a lot of good information on here so follow you gut and see what you find.

Ok haven't been able to do much to the Dozer due to some family illness's. But I have figured out there's no water in the cylinder's & also the radiator is full hasn't lost a drop. Drained the fuel filters & had some water & gunk crap in them. Gotta change all them & get a starter solenoid for it too.

  18. #18Delmer2017-09-17 15:11

So it turned over by hand, and the starter solenoid was making it crank slow? Sometimes you can clean up the contacts in the solenoid and get it to work for a while. Maybe the water doesn't get into the engine. The water separator and filters are supposed to stop water from getting through, hopefully that blockage is what causes the missing and smoke.

  19. #19Coy Lancaster2017-09-17 18:34

You probably had a tip can't me off an injector.

  20. #20Brandon_M2017-09-17 19:09

Yes it'll turn over by hand with a breaker bar, I believe the solenoid is what's slowing the cranking down. Maybe the water in the fuel & gunk in the filters is what caused the missing & white smoking.

Ok good luck on your project.

Hey Brandon, Might i also recommend that you see if your fuel tank has a drain on it.. Its possible that with 2 weeks of rain that your fuel cap (or some other nefarious reason) has somehow allowed water through and has accumulated to an unsuitable level where your separator cant handle the amount its sucking from the tank. There is always going to be a certain amount of condensation build up in your tank over a period of time, the emptier it is, the more water you'll generate. the muck is usually a build up of rust and dust and crud from various other reasons (ie, quality of fuel, dispensation methods, etc) Bring in the water separator. from there, the secondary filter stops all the fun stuff that can be catastrophic to your fuel system's longevity. you say the filters were full of water and muck? was it in both or just the one? I would definitely recommend having a peek in your tank. changing the filters is a requirement, but if your tank is dirty, it'll only be a matter of time till it does it again, costing you more than just a set of filters... Edit: The fuel starvation caused by blocked filters would almost certainly Cause the white smoke you're experiencing. Let us know how you get on, and good luck!

A drop of water in your fuel system getting to a hot injector tip can explode the tip. It sounds like you have lost an injector. As said before, start the engine at an idle and crack each injector line. When you crack a line and hear no change in the engine, that injector or cylinder is the culprit. You may want to pull of the valve cover on that cylinder and make sure you don't have a bent pushrods or broken rocker arm. Pull the fuel injector and check the tip for damage if the overhead looks intact.
