cylinder pins

We run some truck mount tree spade, we have issues with the cylinder pins, I think. 4" cylinders, 2" bushing on either side, 1 1/4 shaft. We pull the bottom of cylinder off at times and pull the 2" bushing ears off at time as well. We currently run 1 1/4 cold rolled shaft. Things seem to break after the pins get some time on them and start to bend under the cylinder. Its my thought we are breaking due to the pin being bent and different and uneven pressures on said parts. Would a harder shaft help or make things worse? I think a pin that would snap would be better than bending. Now of the equipment places have long enough hitch pins, we need something in the 10.5" length. I was thinking of getting some cylinder shaft from our local cylinder repair shop. Thoughts? Thanks

I would stop by you local welding/machine shop show them what’s going on. They can make new pins etc

You could also get some 4140 Prehard Turned, ground & polished. Your local machine shop would have a better idea if that material would work better for you after laying eyes on the pins your using now.

That’s what I am doing. Using cold rolled shafted. I wondering if there is a better choice

    What grade of cold rolled?

Just a welding shop, so probably not high. If u get after hit a stuck pin out with a new 10” pin u can bend new one

Cold rolled is really soft and will bend easily. Yes there are better options. Going to larger size pins is also an option.

Just a thought but if you have a 4" cylinder and a 10" pin it sounds as though there is quite a gap between the inside edge of the boss on the machine and the edge of the cylinder. Is there anyway to weld the 2" spacers that would put the pin in shear instead of the leverage that you have bending it.

maybe a picture and we could get better idea

X2 on the photo request. They will provide insight as to what you need to do to remedy the situation.

Nothing beats hardened machined polished steel as to pins, using Cold Roll as a cylinder pin is cheap but not effective, 4140 or 4160 steel would be a better choice. May shear but not bend and distort.
