The engine block stamp "7S5046-18" and "2P940" are not sufficient to determine the year of your machine. To identify the year of your Caterpillar equipment, you'll need to locate the equipment's serial number. The serial number can typically be found on a metal plate or decal on the machine's frame or body. Once you have the serial number, you can contact a Caterpillar dealer or use their online resources to determine the year of manufacture and obtain information on recommended oil types, including 30W oil. Regarding the issue with the right track not digging when pushing a heavy load, it could be related to various factors, including the hydraulic system, track tension, or worn components. It's recommended to have a qualified technician inspect and diagnose the issue for proper resolution.

Is this a direct drive machine.? Can you confirm the Serial Number. I think that the 82J31119 mentioned in the thread title has one character too many.

When track is slipping try pushing ahead on steering clutch lever. Many times the bearings get stiff and clutch will not return on its own.

Thank you Partsdic I added the extra info to help if needed. Unfortunate I have had to be the technician on all of my equipment on the farm for the last 30 years. It is not finically feasible to to pay a cat dealer to send out a tech on this old of equipment. And if the kids can not hook a computer to it and replace a part they shy away from the work. its up to us old guys to pass try to pass along the desire and knowledge of real troubleshooting. Thanks for the info

Nige the serial number is 82J3119 I did fat finger and add an extra 1 TomA I will give that a shot and see, I should finish welding the root rake today and take it back out for a test run by Wednesday

That's kinda what I thought, 31119 was improbably high for a Serial Number. You really need and Operation & Maintenance Manual, often referred to as an O&M. In your case the manual is SEBU6694. You can download a copy for $30 HERE by entering SEBU6694 in the box and clicking the Search button.

You were asking about the year. 1963 as near as I can tell.

1972 is what my book says for an 82J3119. The serial number is the number needed for ordering parts, year is meaningless. FWD

A serial number should get you the parts you need.......but the parts slingers at the Cat dealers of today are known (at least by me) to use the original designation numbers for machines, in your case D4D to look up parts and are known to look only in the current system. Always mention that the legacy book is where they'll likely find what you are looking for. It has saved me more than a few trips to the parts counter with the with the wrong parts to swap out.

I should have double-checked. The first resource said 1963, when I looked elsewhere the first thing I spotted was that 82J production didn't start until 1968...... Agree with both the above. A Serial Number is all you need to obtain parts & service information. In the latest style your S/N would be written 82J03119 because all S/Ns have 8 characters these days. 82J exists in the online system so you shouldn't have too much difficulty in getting parts.

Fellas- I have a D4D with serial number 82?2224. looks like it could possibly be a "J" under the deep scratch on the plate. looking to find out what year this beast is and find a parts and service manual. Are there possibly any other Letters that this model could have had in the serial number? much appreciated for any direction or help.

82J3119 was built in 1972. 7S5046 is simply the part number cast into the housing attached to the fuel injection pump, which holds the primary fuel filter. 2P940 is simply the casting part number for the engine block for the 4.75" bore 4 cyl engine.

As per the answer in the other thread you posted 82J2224 is a good Serial Number. If you ever go to a Cat dealer for parts the Serial Number would be written 82J02224 because today all Serial Numbers have 8 characters. A Parts Manual would be Caterpillar Publication reference UE070118 which covers 82J machines from first built up to 82J3443. Be careful when searching because there are two other Parts Manuals listed but they cover different ranges of the D4D tractor S/N from 82J3444-Up. For a service manual are you looking for something that covers basic maintenance or a complete machine repair manual.?
