Our Cat D4H (9DB04565) seemed to be bogging down easily, so checked the boost pressure and it was 6.5-7psi. Replaced all the exhaust gaskets, there was a leak on the # 4 cylinder, now it is producing 10-11ish psi of boost. Does anyone know what these 3204s in the D4Hs should produce? I was thinking it should be 15-20psi, but just do not have any knowledge on what it should be. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
Your boost pressure will be directly related to your fueling system being in good order. Good fuel flow and proper atomization is critical.
Thanks for your reply. I agree, this would be something next to check on the machine, but looking for a way to gauge before tying into the fuel system. If the boost is supposed to be 20psi and we are at 10psi with new exhaust gaskets, the fuel system will be next. Do you know any specifications on turbo boost or fuel pressure for these machines?
Let's shout out for those. HEY CAT GUYS!!!!!!!!!
You rang....?? What sort of gauge were you using and how accurate do you think it is.? I would say you'll need a gauge that reads up to no more than approx 20psi. See below. Boost pressure specification is 16.7 inch Hg (8.2psi) at Converter stall RPM with everything at operating temperature.
Fuel pressure specification measured by removing a plug from the fuel filter base is 30-50psi with an absolute minimum of 20psi.
Thank you for the information. We have an acetylene gauge on it 0-20psi, it looks like we are making correct boost now. Will check fuel pressure tomorrow and see where it lands.
Nige.. if memory serves me, aren’t the boost regulator on the pump adjustable.?? I seem to remember lowering the max air required to about 10-15 psi to make up for a sloppy turbo..
