Hi all, a small chunk of the gasket has blown out atop the #1 exhaust port. The local mecs say they are a bear to change. Mostly because the long bolts and the short ones too are usualy hard to remove and some are expected to wring off. Removing the muff and turbo ect above the engine don't look much fun either. Anyone have any tips to help this job along? Would they loosten easier with a warm engine? Any chance I could clean the leak area, which is top front of manifold, and pack it with muffler patch putty to put off teardown for a while? This is a hobby tractor and hardly gets worked much or hard. Any advise or opinions welcome. Thanks, Wayne.
The best bet is to buy a handful of wax candles from your local hardware store and then heat each bolt up individually. A warm engine may help but may also hinder getting your hands in to reach the bolts. Melt the wax directly on to the exposed part of the bolt threads and leave for a while. The wax "wicks" into the hidden part of the threads. Repeat the procedure if necessary. This method has proven almost 100% successful.
