D4h series 3 with 3304 losing antifreeze

Stuner · 2015-09-26 23:04

Losing antifreeze on our d4h series 3 with 3304 engine. No visible leaks nor can you tell if it is burning it. Are they known for head gaskets to go bad? I have seen others with same problem but never seen what was actually wrong with them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

check the radiator for bubbles , most likely a head gasket i have d5hxl and it was doing the same thing and it had a crack the the head gasket between cylinder 3 and 4 in to a water passage

No bubbles in the radiator that we could see. We figured it is head gasket though. Oil samples came back good. We just had cat change antifreeze and now it started losing it. Thanks for reply.

If it's a small leak you may only see a stain where the antifreeze runs out and evaporates on the hot engine.

Take off the plate holding the rear bearing for the water pump at the front cover plate. Remove it carefully and look for coolant that has leaked out of the pump. Later Bob

Thanks for the ideas. When working the dozer all day it will go through a gallon of antifreeze. Doesn't smoke white but heard of others with same thing going on and it turned out to be head gasket. Have to rip into it and see what I find.

Take Bob's advice and look into the water pump before you go pulling the cylinder head off. You KNOW it makes sense ......

Firstly check the rad cap/s then check the weep hole in the lower side section of the water pump, if the weep hole is blocked clean it out you might find your leak, if you follow Bobs advice the water is now in the sump damaging your engine oils ability to lube things, it might be worth cracking open the sump drain valve first thing in the morning as any anti freeze/coolant will come out of the drain valve before the engine oil, if the water pump is faulty they can be easily repaired with simple tools for between £50 to £70 in parts if new bearings are needed, the bearings are common items found in even the simplest bearing outlet. tctractors

Like I said before oil sample is clean of antifreeze. If water pump was leaking out the rear it would be in the oil. That's why I was leaning toward a head gasket I guess.

As always everyone has come with really good advice but TC dropped some gold in his post. Check the weep hole. Even if you was putting water in the oil, check the weep hole. Caterpillar should make a radiator cap big enough to print, "Check the weep hole" on
