Hy Gents, A quick one... does anyone here know what type of fabrication process CAT uses for the final drive spindles? Are they cast? or are composed or welded forgings? Its item 1 on the picture Where can i find structure welding parts, like a ripper pocket? and others alike Thanks
Spindles on track-type tractors are always forged. Doesn't exist AFAIK.
Did not know, i have seen fellas repairing those , on the hell on earth are they getting that... should be some china crap... Thanks for the fast reply.
If you're talking about spindles the fact that they are manufactured in one piece from forged steel is what MAKES them repairable. Cracks in certain locations are not repairable though.
wasn´t talking about the spindles... was about the trunions and ripper pockets and that type of stuff... got a ripper pocket broken...
It's cast steel. Preheat it about 300F, grind out the crack and fill it up with 7018 or 8018. Let it cool on it's own. Peening it between passes wouldn't hurt.
The pockets? cast naaa... they´re forgings but anyway the thing broke beon repair. The spindle is cracked but did not dissasembled yet, made sense if it was cast.... but it looks like is a forging as Nige said...
Well give us a clue. What ripper are you working on? There may be a part number for it. There may even be a part number cast into the old one if it's Cat.
I would have thought a ripper pocket was not rocket science requiring +/-0.005mm tolerances. I think even I could weld up a broken ripper pocket. A final drive spindle. yea, nah.
Its cat, came from a 955 loader. numbers long gone... Gota the same looks as those find in 120/12 graders.
Cast steel or forged steel doesn't make much difference as far as welding goes. Post some pic's. so we can see what you're dealing with.
5K8330 looks promising. Still available from Cat and maybe aftermarket as well.
Definetly the 8k8330... exactly what i´m searching for. going to try my parts suplier. Thanks For welder dave... i´m not a great welder, but i can manage... i don´t know if its a language problem... or something else, in my planet "A" cast is something like a exaust assy, and a forging (stamp) is something like chain link. It does not mean we can´t weld an exaust assy , certainly is not a easy task... On the other hand a chain link can be welded eyes shut and with any technic ... regards to all
Not all cast refers to cast iron. There are many cast steel parts on heavy equipment. Some cast steel parts are also forged for maximum strength. The ripper pocket you need to replace may be cast and then forged. Casting means it's made by pouring liquid steel into a mold. Forging is where high pressure is used to squish or beat the metal into the final shape when the metal is hot, red hot in the case of steel. Casting is generally used where it would be difficult to fabricate a complex part like a backhoe swing post. It's common for cast steel parts to be welded to fabricated assemblies.
There seems to have been just about everything gone wrong with your D5H that is possible. Before you ask,a squirt of oil should solve the squeaking ashtray lid. I had a D5H and I’m glad it was the best tractor I’ve ever owned, and I hope you eventually iron out all the issues you have with yours.I guess this happens sometimes that bad lemons come along once in a while. I hope your luck improves with it.
As i mentioned is a language thing... we use the term cast when we want to refer to Cast Iron , the material engine blocks are made, or parts alike. The king post or other structural parts in machinery is made out of steel, very weldable, did know that could be done by pouring liquid steel in a mould. anyway we call those parts forgings even if they were done by pouring.
Yep, but thats the cost of buying 25k equipment, but i thought it woud be worst than it is. It had issues with engine, and it has issues with TXM, and it has with outfit as it is a LGP version, and i needed a STD, but none was available. (cuting and welding will make it perfect). Some were due to lack of knowledge about this equipment, right now the engine problems are over. The TXM problems are in progress, TXM was overheating and it was cause of Radiator too dirty. Nevertheless i still have the shifting problems have to drop the TXM pump and test it , repair it or a new one. Gods favour and all will be sorted out. Besides this, i have to tackle overall wear and missing parts like a rock guard, 1 or 2 rolers ... some blade play, things common to auction machinery. Problem is we should have this machines go through overhaul before having them to work, and we don´t have the time and the cash for it....
There's several different metals that can be cast and forged.
