D6C 1972 steering adjustment access

Hello Im heading to our family tree farm to help my 87yo father work on his 1972 Caterpillar d6c. It will only steer in 1 direction. My father tells me the steering needs adjustment. The problem is the access to the adjusting mechanism. He says when you pull the panel off there's a hydraulic line in the way and you can't move it enough to access the adjuster with out removing the line. My question is, does this sound correct? and if so is there another way to access the adjuster without removing parts? thanks Bob

You may need to adjust at the actual steering clutch. This adjustment is at rear of machine underneath the fuel tank. Should be 3 3/8" bolts hold a triangle shaped cover on. Once removed adjustment can be made, tighten until stop then back out 1 1/2 turns (9 clicks). It is likely a bit tight to access but should be able to take cover off from underneath fuel tank at rear and complete adjustment. I think this would be better to do than try to adjust at the pedal as this is where the brake gets worn. Attached an link that shows pic, hope it works out for you. Thanks, Jon

Are you trying to adjust the brakes or steering clutch? Brake adjustment is as stated above, then you can adjust pedal position with linkage adjustment. Clutch linkage has an adjustment bolt in the dash.... access panel is below clutch levers. Linkage pivots can get worn and affect operation. I have brazed up holes in linkage and redrilled them. I don't remember any hydraulic line being in the way.
