D6C Steering Clutch’s & Magnetic Strainers

Metalman 55 · 2014-04-21 12:33

I have a couple of questions on our D6C 10K6516 tractor, the first being the steering clutches do not release when the tractor is cold at start-up, even when the outdoor temps are fairly warm. After it is warmed up, say in 10 minutes or so & the machine gets moved about a bit, they start working fine. When cold, if I pull on both steering clutches together it keeps going with full power to both tracks. I saw something similar a few weeks back that someone had posted, but am not sure what advice was given. If it is not something that will have an adverse effect on the tractor, other than the delay in them working at startup, we are ok with it, as the tractor does not get used a lot. Also, I was told a while back that there are possibly 2 magnetic strainer screens for the torque converter/ tranny on this unit, that should be checked periodically, (power shift) but have had no luck finding them. Would I be able to get any more specific information as to where they are located? Thanks, Metal Man

The big trans filter is on the n/side of the engine, the magnetic filter is under your left foot, the torque screen is at the bottom front face of the torque case, the steering clutch release is not adjustable as it is oil fed? the control rods also the brakes are adjustable, but it might be time to do an oil pressure test, although slow performance from cold is often the case, the main filter has a drain point on the lower section so drain it first before you remove the filter after the lid has been removed. tctractors

I was on the machine today for about 1½ hrs. doing some levelling & it takes about 20 minutes of steady going until the steering clutches will release fully with the both levers pulled back & then the one side still wanted to drive a little. Is there a place to check pressures to that part of the control or is it possibly seals somewhere leaking that prevent it from releasing the way it should?

Both screens (under the floor & on the torque case) are perfectly clean. The main trans filter was changed about 50 hrs ago & all was good there. Is there a way to check pressures on the lines running to the steering clutch valves under the seat? I see a couple of plugs there. Can anyone clarify the location of the check points & what the related pressures should be? Metalman

How about having a bash at the simple stuff and check the linkage adjustment first ...? Unless you get that right you can forget the hydraulic side. If you want the procedure please send me a PM with your e-mail address.

Adjustment has been done a few days ago. I think we have done it correctly. Don't know how to send a pm......snooped around a little at doing it but nothing seemed to work for me.

Those unit were notorious for that. What kind of oil do you have in there? Should be 30 wt.

I am not sure.....think it may be 30 weight, however we have only owned the machine about 15 months & the oil was clean when we got it & have not replaced the oil, only the trans filter, as we don't put a lot of hours on it.
