D6M Torque converter problem

Shark ยท 2015-12-08 18:33

Hello I have a question about the transmission fluid not reaching the converter. I Pulled the charge pump and inspected it seems ok, But with in installed and pressure gauges attached Pressure comes up to 400 psi and drops right back to 0 without putting it in gear. any ideas stumped here./and thank you in advance.

What happens if you leave the park brake applied? The pump pressure goes first to the brake release valve and steering valve if it has clutches. Any leakage there would affect the pressure at the trans. Is your tractor diff steer or clutches? Finger tip or lever steer if clutches? Trans, linkage shift or solenoid? This info will help me help you. Later Bob

A machine Serial Number wouldn't go amiss either, just so we know what we're dealing with when it comes to technical information.

It is finger tip steer. also has shift solenoid brake was not applied. when pressure would drop out. I thought that the torque converter was supposed to hold 1 1/2 gallons of oil at all times.?

Try checking the pump pressure with brake applied, warm oil and at high and low throttle. Come back with readings. The oil in the torque is leakage that was not returned to the trans. The less the better. Later Bob

I'm with Bob, it sounds like the pressure is likely dumping from the park/secondary brake manifold. If the pressure stays up with the park brake on (you may have to frig some wiring to fool the system into thinking the brake is off BTW) then this is probably the source of your problems. See below. BTW did the problem start suddenly or has it been something intermittent that's been there for a while before failing completely..? If the machine has been standing for any length of time (overnight or longer) the converter housing ought to have maybe a quart of oil or so in it, not much more than that.

The problem happened all at once the new guy got on it from my understanding and was holding finger brake at high RPM the Oil is burned beyond belief. I have drained the transmission and was going to drain torque converter but to my surprise literally 2 drops can out... I pulled the torque converter scavenge screen and inspected it no debris found... also change transmission filter. I will check the above in the morning. these units run 10 hours a day everyday except on Sunday. Thanks again for the help gentlemen.

Update LOL Cat is grasping at straws now.

A trans pressure test done properly will tell a great deal. Later Bob
