D8k super low power

Hello i have anther question this on a cat a d8K serial#77 it's a old military doZer that's now being used for forestry work running a v blade. The problem is it has no power we have two other k's and This one is so under powered compared to the others. it is also slow To rev up. Any how we have been told that the govern is hung what else could we check? When the machine is under load there is no smoke being put out through the exhaust. The machine does not get hot or over heat. We need to find the problem being it is slowing down production. Thanks for any help.

have you changed the fuel filters at all?

It sounds to me like the fuel -air ratio control is not working, its activated via an air line from the inlet manifold, so firstly check the pipe it is clamped and often fretts at these spots, then fit the pipe back into the control so you can blow down the pipe, if your eyes bulge out while blowing its not failed inside on the rubber bit, if its easy to blow down the pipe the rubber bit is knackered, in the top of the control you will see a series of holes for the bolts to adjust to, mark the top before you remove the bolts if you have to go inside or adjust this item, you need "Gun Smoke" on speed up of the motor, I usualy set them for a good cloud of Soot untill I get a bollicking, dont forget the saying No Smoke No Poke. blowing it on tctractors

    No smoke,no music.....Ron G

Well that line is blocked off and if it is hooked up the machine runs worse. Any other ideas?

Did you check the throttle linkages? There is also a fuel strainer down by the transfer pump. The mesh is so small it will catch and drop water, and then rust up. I would also check the shut off valve on the tank. Have you opened the stripping valve on the bottom of the fuel tank. Usually there will be some water in that which will give you and indication of the rest of the fuel system.

jw, did you test the F/A Ratio control like I suggested, also did you run the engine with the pipe removed allowing the air pressure in the manifold to escape, there is a strainer fitted to the tank tap, then there is the mesh filter, the hand primer pump does effect fuel pressure resuling in power loss easily spotted when steering the tractor, then there is the spin-on fuel filter, if the F/A ratio control is not working correctly the engine will be unable to build power, the D8K's all have the compact injector pump so if everything else is good (Torque etc) it might be in need of pump work, they are not hard to fettle in the control housing, the throttle linkage usualy has loads of wear in the spindle bushings this might be worth checking, Oh and the F/A Ratio control needs to work so get it sorted else your wasting your effort. tctractors

No power, no smoke sounds like no fuel. Sometimes braided fuel lines develop a rubber flapper on the inside of the hose from being old or assembled wrong. You might want to plug off the tank and take a look any where there is a fitting to see if it is stopped up. I am thinking you have a supply restriction somewhere.

TC is right, No Smoke No work done. Check what pressure is coming down the pipe you reconnected. Then take the Air Fuel Ratio control apart and look for a broken diaphragm. I requires Boost air from turbo to burn the fuel before the control lets the pump open up. Later Bob

The fuel lines on the D8K are Steel pipe, they can get silted up through the run also they have a joint conection within the run that sometimes holds sediment?, but if you are looking after 3 D8's on the site this should be easy for you to fix, I would firstly do the overhead set on the valves, then check the pump timing, go through the linkage to the pump, then sort the fuel lines with a fuel pressure check (gauge in Dash) finaly setting the F/A Ratio control, the air filters would also get swapped out for fresh ones (Both), finaly I would check the rear engine mounts with a spanner/socket on both mounting faces on each mount. tctractors

It has all new fuel lines. New filters. And the f/a is blocked off. I'll have to check the linkage but could the grovern be hung on the inside of the pump? Thanks for all yall help so far!!

Blocking off the air fuel ratio control doesn't really mean it's working properly. For a quick test take the three bolts out of the cap turn the cap clockwise about 2 turns and try it again. Also with the engine running full throttle grab the linkage at the pump and see if you can hear it rev up any when you push on it.

I would be checking for broken diaphragm first here also. Not a hard job and a fast check. This is a common problem.Just had this on a 3406 engine in my lowboy truck. No power or smoke.Replaced and it came to life.Good luck

Un Block the Blocked Off thing and test the rubber bit in the F-A-R-C and you might be Off. tctractors p.s. why leave it not working as the pump cannot fuel correctly, the engine will only trot along on a fast idle???????????????
