Another D9 unless something is locked up. Bob

Sorry I should have added engine runs starts and fine. In extreme cold and trans wont engage - 15 not counting windchill. Other hyd functions are operational . Just looking for info on if it will or how to make it free wheel to load on trailer

Are your transmission filters and screens full of metal. Has your transmission pump lost its prime. (Do you have hydraulic pressure to the transmission, clutches and brakes.) Is your parking brake engaged. Will your steering clutches disengage. As Bob said, get another 8 or 9 and push it on. The works begins from here.

Cleaned screens and replaced filters and changed oil is there special priming process ?

pull plug on filter housing top and start motor. Define "free wheel". Bob

By free wheel i meant can it be pushed onto trailer. Engine runs fine but will build no trans pressure. Found the pickup screen full of crap- filters looked horrible too. Dropped trans oil and cleaned screen and replaced filters. Still will not pick up oil and engage a gear. Pump was taken apart and no broken shafts or anything showed some wear but everything turning. Just wont prime and build pressure

If the transmission is not locked up. Will the drive line turn with the motor running? The tractor has mechanical brakes so if the parking brakes will release you can move the tractor without the motor running . Bob

You could pull the axles out of the final drives and then it will have no brakes. It will then roll without running. Just be careful .

Is it common to have to bleed this filter housiing or charge (fill filter housing) with oil to get it to pick up and pump ? I found the pump on Ebay for $479 and it is used on several different machines. Is the trans pump prone to failure because of wear ? shaft breakage ? internal valves ? or is pump shot ?

The transmission pump pulls oil from the bevel gear case (sump) through the screen, through the pump, then fills the filters. There should be a pressure tap on your pump. You can help bleed a damaged pump at the pump pressure tap if it will make pressure. If it won't make pressure, you will need to replace the pump. When you get pressure at your pump, she might move. Were your filters collapsed. Were they full of debris. If the filter housing bypassed because the filters were full of debris, I'd look at the priority valve next. If the priority valve is full of debris, she may not be sending oil to the transmission which will prevent the transmission from engaging. One thing at a time. First you need oil pressure at your transmission pump. If you have oil pressure, you can release the brakes (or release them manually) and release the clutches, enabling you to push her onto a lowbed. Still going to need a heavy machine to do that unless the lowbed has a military grade winch.

Thanks for the help. The machine is in western Iowa and I am in Ohio- 700 miles. Sent a lowboy to pick it up and damn thing wont load itself. Hate to buy parts to throw at it and trying to get some answers to get it home for repairs.

d9H dont have planetarys just final drives its not a high track

  13. #13Mobiltech2022-01-25 21:37

Oops. I just read the d9 at the top and thought high drive.

  14. #14.RC.2022-01-26 04:06

Actually they do have planetary gears in the final drives.

  15. #15Bluox2022-01-26 07:44

While the 9H does have a planetary final drive it doesn't have an axle to pull. Cat did build 1 D9H high drive tractor. Bob

Along with the cold -10 to -15 the night before truck arrived. Combined with crap maintenance from previous owner. Suction -screen-filters and oil was molasses. We serviced trans thinking it would pump oil. Cat mechanic that did field service didn’t seat suction filter in housing causing cap not to seal kinking filter and had a suction leak along with stripped stud in process. Once that was fixed the machine is operational again. Hopefully it stays alive long enough to get on a trailer this weekend. Thanks for the replies as I was at my wits end being 700 miles away from it.

Anyone have any leads on a set set of side engine covers ? Thinking the fodder in the fields may make a fire hazard. Or just take the belly pans off ?

  18. #18Check Break2022-01-26 23:30

There's a company in Oklahoma that makes aftermarket covers. They're not as good as CAT. Search online with the baffle and cover part numbers. Might find a set on machinery trader.

I didn't think about that screen not sealing, but I don't operate in extreme cold. You mechanic probably thought his problem was the cold when she started to resist and didn't stop to look. A good lesson for all of us. At least your pump still makes pressure. If you don't want to use a helicoil in that filter housing, check out GARDsert. A much better way to repair threads.

As soon as you remove the belly pans, something will find it's way through your oil pan.

It shouldn't be too difficult to make them from 4'X8' X 11ga. steel sheets. I used to make them out of 1/2" plywood for use in the winter to stay warm.
