Water blows out radiator immediately when started on D5

Missouri Darrell · 2022-01-23 11:57

I have an older D5 bulldozer. Before starting the dozer, I check the water in the radiator. It is full, I leave the cap off, start the doZer and it immediately blows the water out the top of the radiator, bad.....Why. Dozer has a new headgasket and a new water pump. Problem has not been fixed..

Is the water pump just pushing the water out due to no thermostat or is it actually getting combustion pressure in it

Was the head pressure tested? head and block checked for flat? You could try filling the radiator back up to just above the fins, then starting again, sounds like combustion leak though, sorry.

Welcome to HEF, Missouri Darrel ! What happens if you leave the cap on after filling it and then starting it ?

    Sounds like a cracked head

How much water is it pushing out? On my D4H, it has no overflow bottle, therefore, it is only filled to the top of the square insert down inside the top tank. Could you have it overfilled?

You mention installing a new head gasket and water pump...any work/rebuilding of the head? And as asked above, any pressure tests? Is this “older” D5 a pre combustion chambered head??

It's the seals on the pre-combustion chambers and/or pinholes in them caused from cavitation due to previous failure to keep the coolant conditioner additive up to date. Buy the tool on Ebay to unscrew the chambers to replace the orings and check the chambers closely for pinholes. Pretty cheap to fix.
