Sounds like somebody has already stole a Cat 246 and is looking to give it a new identity. Contact your local dealer and tell them what has happened. Ask them if there is a way to mark the machine details on Cats data base so when somebody goes to buy parts and quotes YOUR serial number it rings an alarm. It should also show up at any auction houses if you alert them that your plate has been stolen, when the ringer is entered for sale it should set alarms ringing and kill two birds with one stone. A stolen piece recovered and a dodgy seller out of pocket. As for getting a new plate, I would have thought that possible, ask the dealer while doing the above.

first off thanks for the info i am new to the forum and the trade. i bought my 246 used and have only had it a couple weeks. so the theives wanted my plate not my loader.nice i can see future problems here is this the norm. do people steel that many loaders. i will be doing as you said and i will contact alban and cat to see if i can get a new plate. i was unable to get any info off the plate and was wanting to service the machine prior to use. any way to find out the engine that is in it and info needed. thanks

You are very welcome. Thanks for that info, I am in the habit of assuming that folk are experienced. Its easy to upset folk by telling them what they already know I dont know about your part of the world but here in the UK plant theft is BIG business. Over a £1M, yes, million pounds A WEEK of plant goes missing, thats everything from the smallest mini exc up to 50t extec crushers, nothing is safe, only a tiny fraction is ever recovered. :Banghead Here we are starting to get a handle on it, but ringing, ( stealing another machines identity ) is very common. Machines have been recovered here with the ID of machines in Australia. If you want a fright, click this link. It is one of the outfits my machine is registered with. http://www.ter-europe.org/ Seriously, get on to your dealer and have a chat. :drinkup

Since we don't have titles for equipment in the U. S. once a stolen machine has changed hands the only way to track it is when the poor shmuck who bought it takes it in for service to a dealer and they input the serial no. So there is a trade in stolen ID plates, never knew, it but makes sense. Of course if the shmuck bought it super cheap from a stranger with a sad story, I don't have any sympathy.

Take your Engine Serial Number with you when you go to the dealer. It can lead to and verify the machine SN that it is installed in.

the machines serial number is stamped in the body under the missing plate. cat dealer was notified. thanks for all the advice. i have another question i was thinking of purchasing another cat skid steer that has no motor in it everything else is there. where would be a good place online to find a good used motor.
