Decal removal?

WBC ยท 2014-04-25 21:44

I bought a used truck that has had decals removed from it but the glue is still there. What can a person do to get that glue off without damaging the paint or clear coat???

3m makes an adhesive remover that works pretty good. There's also what's known as an eraser wheel you chuck in a drill and it peels it off. If the decals have been on there more than a year or so the outline of the graphics will still be visible as the paint under the decal wasn't fading behind the decal. Only way to cure this is new decals that cover the old or repaint the doors.

2nd the 3M adhesive remover and the sticker wheel. I have found discolored paint will come around with either a very good cleaner wax (California custom m-ron)and or two weeks in direct sun.

I have a truck that i bought from a friend about 6 years ago that he had only owned about 2 years and you can still see and where his stickers were but I have not waxed it but it has been run every day it had about 122,000 miles then now it has 330,000 +

A sign guy showed me a trick, get a heat gun or hair dryer, get it hot to the touch, makes the adhesive soft and easier to remove.

I will say, If you get one of the eraser wheels, Be sure to put them in a drill NOT a die grinder. They will explode.

As said earlier a heat gun works best to remove both the decal and adhesive just go slow and take your time but if you've already removed the decals and the glue got left behind some goo gone or gasoline will probably work ok just be sure to test it on a small less noticeable area first in case the paint reacts badly.

get you a can of stuff from a paint store called "airplane stripper" it will wipe the goo off in 1 pass..... the 3M adheaseive remover is wonderful stuff also...

"Aircraft remover" is not all the same. They make a certain one for decals and glue. Others will take the paint off.

I use citrol, Schaefer makes it, let it soak for 15 minutes and a hot water pressure washer...no residue

Our steam cleaner will take anything off for decals and glue, never had issues with the paint before, in fact we can't keep decals on anything anymore, takes about 20 seconds and all decals are gone, but all the above work too, just more elbow grease is required, along with time.
