Deere 160C Coupler Hydraulic Supply

GOBucks · 2025-12-14 20:51

We purchased a Geith coupler for our John Deere 160C. The Geith kit is designed to utilize the pump test port for the hydraulic oil supply. Our 160C has a Rexroth A8V080LA1KH2/63R1-NSG05F000-S MNR:2084022 pump, which we don’t see a test port in. This machine had a coupler which was removed at some point by previous owners. While we found a line from the 1 way aux circuit capped off, where the previous coupler was connected isn’t obvious. Perhaps it was just teed into the bucket circuit. Does anyone know of a direct pump source for a coupler without having to add a sandwich plate between the pump and one of the main pressure lines?

Tap into existing auxiliary circuit pressure line (best option in my opinion): You found a capped line from previous coupler which is likely the original supply. Trace it back to verify it connects to a proper aux circuit (not just bucket line). If it's a dedicated aux with flow control, use that and install tee fitting for coupler supply. Some Geith couplers only need 300-500 psi pilot pressure, not full system pressure. If coupler needs full pressure (2500+ psi), this won't work. Contact Geith or your Deere dealer with your pump model, they'll specify proper connection point for your specific setup. That capped line is your best lead.

I'd bet money that capped line you found is exactly what you're looking for. My guess is the old owner just slapped a cap on it when they took the old coupler off. That's definitely the first place I'd look. It's way easier than trying to tap into the main pump.

I recommend contacting Geith directly and ask them if they have a machine specific installation instructions. A 160LC is a bit old, so they may have those archived, but I wouldn't bet on it. Bucket couplers need a constant supply of pressure to help keep them closed. Using the auxiliary circuit is not advised. Many couplers either tap into the bucket circuit or into the pump that supplies pressure to the bucket (see picture below). I would get a tee to place between the pressure sensor and the pump port to supply pressure to the coupler control valve.

The Geith rep confirmed full pressure. The capped lines are #5 and the tee in the pics below. We really don’t know how these were used, but suspect a coupler was previously installed based upon the sticker in the cab. We are going to tee into the pump pressure sensor as mg2361 suggests below. Thank you for the quick respons.

Thank you mg2361. We‘ll plumber this in tomorro.

Those lines you have numbered and the valves associated with them are for controlling the auxiliary hydraulics (for a breaker), not for working a bucket coupler.

We have a 160g deere with a coupler, I know it works off of residual pressure, like when any function is used, it apples pressure to close the coupler jaws. I'm not sure where it is plumbed in.
