Deere 260 Parking Brake will not release

dieseldog5.9 · 2026-01-14 09:13

Working on a Deere 260 for the neighbor, machine starts up and cant release the parking brake, sounds like the seat belt switch may have needed to be jiggled in the past to make it work. Any service information would be appreciated. SN XV0260A260911

Does your seat light, and seat belt light, go off as intended? Sometimes people overlook the park button on those. Assuming you’re on your seat, then lock your seat belt, you have to press the bottom of the park bottom down, it will recess temporarily. So technically those toggles have three positions- up, middle, and down temporarily (when you press it). You likely know this, but saying it’s your neighbors, maybe it’s new to you. (A common mistake I’ve seen on that series) If this isn’t the overlooked issue; the park brake on these are hydraulic and rather extensive. Usually they won’t lock. Not get locked on. There’s a selenoid back on the left side if you remove left side panel, down behind seat if I remember right. You can remove and stick a screwdriver in it and see if it’s magnetizing and de-magnetizing as intended. It just slides off a spool, you can leave it plugged in, and with someone else in the operator seat, test its function. Just don’t stick your fingers near any moving parts when working back there! Haha done that before…

Ditto^^^^. To expand on this, you need to sit in the seat, then engage the seat belt in that order, or the PB will not release.

You are correct, I have never run a Deere skidsteer and had no Idea about the multiple step process for the park brake button. However the owner would know this and he called me for assistance. The seat belt switch has multiple butt connectors and the seat switch is connected to a rusty seat pan, the seat switch is a roller style released by sitting on the seat pad. Any chance someone has a wiring schematic?

I’m fairly certain the seat switch and seatbelt switch are NO 2 wire switches (normally open). Fairly easy to test and bypass. You can disconnect the seat switch at the connection point, and jump across it to see if your seat display red light goes off (assuming it isn’t already). You can do the same for the seat belt switch. You can also do this with the cab up, just make sure your levers aren’t pressed, but rather left in nuetral center- if it does unlock, it’ll drive away. If you jump acrossed both in the proper order (seat then seatbelt), and then press toggle down firmly, it will likely release. With the cab up, you’ll be able to see backside or wiring. The insulation on back of cab that cuts out engine sound and heat may have found home to some mice also..

I have done electrical diagnostics for 30 years, and prefer to work from a schematic, this is a huge help and clears up a ton of confusion.

Check fuses first. I distinctly remember my 260 having an issue where the lights would go out, but the park brake would not release and there was a blown fuse. The hydraulic lines that go to the park brakes are also bad about developing leaks.
