Dozer nomenclature

Johnny English ยท 2009-01-04 16:56

This has probably been asked a hundred times, but I'm a new boy to this, but anyway. Does anyone know what, if any, the number has reference too in D6, D65, D8, D85 etc on dozers model names?

From my personal experience, a 65 seems to be on par with a d6, but a D85 seems closer to a D7 than a D8

Cat dozer nomenclature. Hi, Johnny English. As I understand it from reading Randy Leffingwell's 'Caterpillar Farm Tractors And Bulldozers, the 'D' stands for diesel but the numbers were chosen because they didn't mean anything. The logic behind this was that if the numbers meant anything like horsepower or weight, they would have to change the numbers every time they released a new, bigger version of a model. This way, nothing needs to be changed.

Time will tell but the current letter for most large Cat tractors now may be the last time it is changed, D for diesel, T for tractor.

Nomeclature. Hi, Gavin84W. I have wondered for a while now where Cat might go when they run out of letters for the various series, especially since they've bypassed a few letters on the way through. I'd guess that there is somebody at Cat who is paid a LOT more than me to worry about that. Having said that, we have already had 2 separate D4C models and there is a second D7E model in the pipleline. And they've already had a D10X. Curious.

G,day Deas, Yes for us traditionalist they don,t seem to care do they!! recycling old numbers in the hope everyone has forgotten!! A couple of cases with the current line would be the new 772 dump truck, that used to be a belly dumper made from the 773, the 993 wheel loader when all wheel loaders used to end in equal numbers so a 993 should be a track loader and how about the serial number of one of the new M series graders, D9G can you believe it!!!!!

On the mini excavators they add another C in fornt of the CR models so now they ar C CR models. So they may do that with dozers and some of the other stuff:beatsme:usa
