hello everyone, i was wondering about what kind of transmission bulldozers have. So from what i know, most are countershaft and planetary gear set(power shift trans) but i also heard some are hydro-static... is there another type of trans? can someone tell me what company does hydro static and also which trans is the most common thanks

It will take many pages on this forum to go into detail as to what the hundreds of different dozers have for transmissions. Your opening question covered the three most common types. The different arrangements are too numerous to cover here in my opinion.

Guess the question would need to include what vintage machine you are asking about also. There are also the good old direct drive models!

John Deere and Liebherr currently use hydrostatic transmissions and have done so for a long time.

The new CAT D 7 E is electric drive as are some of the Russian dozers having diesel electric drive trains.

I'm not sure the exact meaning of the letters and numbers, The numbers like D6, D9, etc, is the size of the machine. I believe the D designates dozer. It's kind of like F series ford trucks, the bigger the number, the bigger the machine. The letter after the number is kind of like the trim package on a vehicle. The machine is for example a D3 C, means it's a D3 dozer, style C. Same deal with excavators and other cat equipment. IE: 955, 955H. 951, 951L, 951C

The letter after the number, for Cat and most other manufacturers, is the series. Generally speaking, the earlier the letter in the alphabet, the earlier the machine was made. Some letters have been reused, the original D7E was just the D7 between the D7D and the D7F, the current D7E is an electric hybrid. The D, btw, is for "Diesel", since the original Caterpillar crawler tractors were, of course, gasoline powered. Dozer is short for bulldozer, which was originally the blade and attaching hardware, now, it is used to mean a tractor with blade. In the early years, companies made tractors, other companies made bulldozers to put on them. Check out Rocklands, they still do. http://www.rocklandmfg.com/index.php?page=dozers
