Eaton 18? Check your nuts

RobVG · 2010-09-18 11:50

One of our drivers was complaining about a "vibration" when going to high. It ended up being the syncros but also there was $4000 dollars in other damage. The cause- the yoke nut on the output shaft had backed off. I checked our other trucks and found another nut that had backed off. I ask the guys in service what are the odds of having two of these? They said it’s pretty common and have done “lots of these”. I don’t know if that meant transmission repairs or nut replacement. Eaton has just come out with a new crimp nut with some type of lock tight in the threads. To Eaton‘s credit, they paid for the parts even though the truck was out of warranty. In my opinion, if they knew about the problem, there should have been a recall instead of letting them go until failure.

It's unfortunate but the phenomena in manufacturer's warranty language is called "fix as fail". It still gripes me to no end because the problem item usually causes collateral damage that will not be covered by the manufacturer under any circumstances. All the dealers get notices of these things all the time so 99 times out of 100 they already know of at least the possibility of something happening. That's why the well worn phrases from product support and warranty people, "that's the first time I've ever heard of that" or "you must have been doing something really crazy to cause that" just drive me up the wall. Going postal in that situation is justified.

And that statement is usually followed by "but we have a kit - P/N xyz123 - with all the specific parts that you will need to fix that problem right here on the shelf..." But yeah, they have NEVER heard of that before...
