Problem: A backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer heading east on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a criss-cross pattern layered with 1 foot vertical spacing. Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast does the trailer with the backhoe have to be going to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no headwind and no braking by the driver who is oblivious of the situation . . . ) Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above . Answer: Scroll down....... ... Answer - It doesn't really matter... The point is that the trucking company just bought themselves a bridge
Evidentally not fast enough to keep on going If he was going twice as fast it would have made it all the way thru!! By the way your 8 ton backhoe is more likely a 30 some ton excavator
Well If it were an 8 ton backhoe, you could be going mach three and it would still be in little pieces on the ground and have the float pass right through, But a 30 + ton long reach excavator, will stop the trailer ain about 35 feet from 75 MPH and shear the kingpin off the gooseneck, while completely xxxxxxx the bridge in the process
yes true..was gonna change it to 30 but just posted as i seen..8 ton would be quite small..
PullPan's pic link with the brand new CAT 311 that sheared off it's own tracks is the best exaample yet!
That I would like to see... Where is the link?
