Have an EL240B, I'm sure this question applies to most equipment though having some serious smoke out the exhaust....whitish/bluish in color. It only happens after throttling down to idle and will continue to smoke if left ideling. Under power, no real discernible smoke or on start up. Also very little smoke through breather....did check the breather for blockage, there was none..... Turbo????
white/blue smoke=unburnt fuel, black smoke, loss of power, seal out of turbo. machine using oil?
no doesn't seem to be using oil, what would be the cause of unburnt fuel? The engine won't stop with the key now, it has a fuel shut off solenoid, haven't had time to check things out......don't think it's related to the smoking, don't know though
possible valve stem seals. if it was a fuel problem it most likly smoke all the time.did the problem start all at once or get worse over time.
thank you
Pretty much all of a sudden, took it in to the Cat dealer for a new undercarriage and fluid and filter change, as soon as it was unloaded at my property I noticed the smoke, didn't smoke before going in the shop. It only does it when powering down to idle, doesn't smoke after starting the machine up and idling Did have an issue when I went to use it after coming back from the dealer, lost power...I figured out it was a clogged fuel line from the tank
Sounds like a slobbering injector.
I agree, if you're not having to add oil, most likely a bad injector. Unburned fuel as well as motor oil can cause a white/blue smoke, but typically, unburned fuel smoke will kinda burn your eyes and really stinks whereas motor oil smoke has the distinct smell of burned oil.
Thanks Out today using it, it is definetly oil....it was spitting oil out the exhaust. Clears up after a few minutes till you drop back down to an idle
take the oil cap off and check and see if you have a lot of blowby coming out or check breather line.could be a stuck ring or a bad piston. if it has a turbo check if the seal in it is leaking oil. you should be able to see it by removing the air filter.most of the time when a seal goes it smokes under load. keep us posted.
didn't get a chance to pull the oil cap off, almost no smoke coming out of the cc breather will check the oil cap next week just thinking out loud, tell me if I'm wrong. To me it seems like it would be the turbo, with the "raw" oil spitting out of the exhaust.....seems if it was valve seals etc., it would get burned off in the combustion chamber and just smoke. Like I said it just does it mostly at real low rpm's (idle)???? Can't look from the airfilter to the turbo, it's about 2' away and has a few bends Has much truth is there to covering the exhaust while transporting to protect the turbo? The dealer didn't do that when picking it up or delivering
not much pressure from the cc breather is a good thing.try a mirrow to look in the turbo. what kind of engine is it ? also make sure the turbo drain is not restricked. you need to do what ever you need to do to get a look at turbo, also it could be leaking oil on the exhaust side of it. if there is a lot of oil in the turbo inlet then you've found your problem. you may need to remove to turbo and have it checked.
I'll probably pull the turbo one day, it runs great other than the smoking issue, just one of those things that kinda bug ya.
