Final Drives

Well, Here goes,Today I was watching a video of mini excavator hauling logs.It was A Kubota KA040 or something like this. Now a mini excavator is made to dig.Right? So how hard is it on the final drives to be toeing logs for 3/4 a mile and back. Going up and down hill? On the topic of final drives, is the final drive for a skid steer more robust than for a mini excavator?A skid steer is used to move dirt from one place to the next.A mini excavator is made to dig, not move logs. So my final (pun here) question is are the final drives built better for a Skid Steer or a Mini Excavator? Thanks, Ken

A lot of jobs you just use what ya' got... while it may not be the best tool for the job or even a tool designed for the job at hand it gets the job done... we use our mini's for pushing dirt a good percentage of it's travel time... and most of that is probably considered heavy pushing probably not the best thing for a mini... and might explain why the left final is running about 50 percent torque anymore but it is over 13 years old and over 7k on the clock so I think it has done a good job through the years and I'm guessing we'll have to put a final or at least a motor in the drive sooner or later... unless I stick to curved sites to flatten..

Same arguments made when companies started shovel logging. There were problems on some makes at first but later generation machines had more problems with owners and users not changing the oils than application problems. The big difference between mini excavator drives and skid steers is the speeds they run at.
