I am regular auto mechanic... my ford 5500 tractor / backhoe lost forward.. reverse is good anyone have any ideas where to start... thanks
neutral switch on front bucket dump stuck or neutral switch on floorboard stuck
forgot to mention that this is a 1974 ford 5500....does this model have these neutral switches.. if so where would the bucket dump switch be located... and thanks for your time
dont think it has any neutral switches like jimg is referring to, they are more common on the newer machines. My '81 555 doesnt have any. -Mike Sounds like a trans issue, maybe forward clutch is gone.
Could be wrong, but I'm thinking a '74 5500 didn't use a fwd/rev shuttle trans, they used a single clutch pack to disconnect engine from tranny drives, and a fwd/rev shifter that selected a forward gear connection to tranny shaft and a counter-rotating gear/shaft to get reverse. If that's the way your tranny is configured, the first thing you want to check is the shift linkage, make sure it's moving shift arm on transmission fully. If every thing is good there, more than likely a problem with the innards.
may not have the neutral switchs mine is 1985 555A and switch is a button on the top end of lever that dumps front bucket,,,,i think ACTOEQUIP has right idea,, good luck
I've got a '73 5550, I looked in the service manual, most likely it's the front clutch. The fact that you have reverse means the torque converter, pumps, filter, rear clutch are probably ok. They suggest a first step of checking the pressure. Right side of tranny, about 7" from the front of the tranny, is a test port. You need to attach a 300PSI gauge. Warm up the oil and it should be at least 95PSI and no more than 175. Try it in neutral, reverse, forward, no more than 5PSI difference between positions. Could be something with the forward/reverse valve, like leaking in the forward position. There's a $30 download parts manual I stumbled accross, http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/106149546-ford-new-holland-5500-4-cylinder-tractor Also saw a service manual for $99, search "Ford 5500 backhoe" , I'd get the manual and use that, lot of work to pull the tranny and find it was something simple you could have found with some troubleshooting. If you have a 5500, it's between a '65 and '72. Mine was a one year, then they went to 750 and 755. Those have turbos, our beasts didn't. The tranny was the weak point in these, keep it in first or second gear when you're moving dirt. Too high a gear overheats the oil and cooks the seals. So you get what you've got.
thanks,, could not find switches but i did not mention it was a 1974... going to check the other suggestions and get back with ya.. again thanks for the help
Huh? Am I totally misreading post #3? :beatsme
Maybe I could be like mine. The dump valve is mechanical and is hooked up to the brakes. Step hard on the brake and it goes into neutral. This device does not effect reverse only forward. On mine it is left side around the bell housing. I think this was an option. My father bought it new around 1973 or 74 and this simpton only happened once years ago (no forward) and it was a stick or something holding this valve on or disengauged and this was during the 78 blizzard. Our Ford dealer is local and they sent the service truck and this guy went right to the problem. Dirt leaves and things have a way to mess up your day. like said above, later on they went to electric with a red button. Maybe that was for a reason. Check it out....
hi i have 1974 5500 ford backhoe that the trans will not engage all other things work fine what may be the prob
