Ford 555 backhoe

muskyherb ยท 2019-07-16 09:01

Just bought this backhoe to do work around my property and wondered if anyone could give me some advice about my problem. I have forward and reverse and all my gears but it hesitates, some times for quite awhile before it starts to move. Sometimes its forward but mostly reverse. Once its in gear it is strong and wont slip. This thing is old with many hours. Is my linkage wore out?

Doesn't sound like a linkage issue. Strainers and/or filters for the transmission could need servicing or the oil level is low. Someone more familiar with these machines can give more details.

"Strainers or filters seam to make sense. I checked the fluid levels and they are all good. The shifter lever is supper sloppy and that didn't make sense to me ether but I'm trying to come up with things to look at without pulling the tractor apart and rebuilding the transmission. Thanks for the advice.

Worn linkage could be your problem. I assume you say that because your shift lever is "super sloppy". Super sloppy shift lever can be caused by worn bearings that the shift lever rotates within. Check out the external linkage all the way to the bell housing. If it's worn out, replace the bearings and rod ends. You can probably find those online a lot cheaper than CNH. You can bypass the external linkage by disconnecting the linkage at the bell housing and shift between F & R by rotating the bellcrank on the vertical shaft that comes out of the bellhousing. It won't turn easily. Take care you don't shift into gear and get run over. Maybe lift the rear wheels off the ground with the stabilizers before beginning this process. If she shifts normally when you switch the bellcrank from F to N to R, you know the problem is in your external linkage. If there's no noticeable difference when you eliminate the external linkage, you need to check the internal linkage. This consists of the vertical shaft, the exterior bellcrank and the interior bellcrank. There's a bearing top and bottom. Check out the pin that connects the interior bellcrank to the main shuttle valve that switches you between F, N & R. Sometimes the pin wears and prevents the interior bellcrank from moving the shuttle valve. This often feels like the shuttle snaps into gear after a delay when you shift from F to R and back. So, I would absolutely check out your outer and inner linkage before splitting the tractor. You'll have to do it anyway as part of a shuttle rebuild so you're not engaging in an act of futility.
