hello people, i just got a ford 655c backhoe, only problem so far is NO BRAKES.... I need to either adjust or repair... Please anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance...
It's better if you can adjust them a little. It is a big job to go into them. They are a mech brake linkage into the axle housing with a two cam plate and balls that expand to apply pressure to the plates and disc to stop the unit. They run in the trans/diff lube and are a wet brake. If you haven't checked the lube in the rear do so now, and be sure to check the boot/seals on the brake rods that go into the axle housing, if the boots are cracked or torn you may not have much lube in there and it will take out the pinion bearing along with the brakes worn slap out. To adjust the brakes raise the rear wheels off the ground, release the parking brake, place in 2wd and block front wheels, trans in neutral, spin rear wheel feel for drag by hand. Under the machine at the axle housing brake rod you will see a stamped metal clevis, it has a special nut that turns in the clevis and a jamb nut, loosen the lock nut and turn the other to tighten the rod, if the rod is run out threw the clevis the adjustment and hitting the cam it may not have any adjustment left. Tighten two rounds, spin wheel by hand for drag, check pedal height. Some the linings are off inside and disc shot, it would be a metal to metal adjustment and not a real good thing. If you have no brakes they are more than likely trashed with the adjustment all the way up, or the linings off the discs, the bonding comes loose. There is a newer style lining also from ford if you replace them.
Sheep foot,,,,,,, I found the linkage, will attemp to adjust, boy I sure hope the brakes are not trashed..., thank you very much for the help,,,, much appreciation !!!
