Ford A62 cold weather starting?

kevman6 · 2023-04-18 12:47

Have a 1980 A62 loader that started the other day in 80 deg weather, but wouldn't fire today in 32 deg weather. Only get white smoke. I tried cycling the key a few times before starting, but it didn't help. Are there glow plugs in these old diesels? I read of a manifold heater glow plug, but not sure how that would keep it from trying to start even with starting fluid.

Looks like the Ford 401 engine has glow plugs. Wow, that’s a blast from the past. Being a pre-cup engine, She’s not going to want to start unless the glow plugs are working, at that temp. Go easy on the ether, my friend, or that will become the topic of your next thread, titled, “ why does my A62 have bent rods & broken pistons”.

Usually one or the other, if you have glow plugs, you DON'T use ether. If you have an intake heater, you won't have a manifold heater, from the factory at least. A block heater works with anything except a deutz. If you have glow plugs, check them individually for continuity/ohms, and check that they're getting voltage. Could be there's another key position to activate the glow plugs.

Was up to 42 deg today Started with a little feathering of the pedal. No starting fluid!! It definetely is a fair weather machine. No block heater.
