Freewheel a 262c?

Acoals ยท 2025-03-07 11:28

Cat 262c, serial TMW00555 At 3:30 AM the other day during a snowstorm the machine stopped moving. Engine runs, no hydraulics of any type, including engine fan motion, we suspect the drive coupler broke. Is there any way to get the machine to free wheel? View attachment KIMG1960.JPG

AFAIK no there isn't, unless you remove the drive chains from both sides.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the reply . . .

I have not done it with that series and am not near my computer but just looking @ SIS2GO on my phone it looks similar to the D series. On those it is pretty easy to pull the motor. Have done those several times and you don't need to drain chain case oil or remove hoses or anything. Pull center cover on the outside, remove sprocket retaining bolt and then the 8 or so nuts that hold the motor in the case. Don't even have to raise cab and chain oil level is below bottom of cover.

If it's on pavement -Get a set of the jack wheel dollies , jack the 4 wheels and winch it on a rollback. Take it to the shop and roll it off. Makes it nice to get in a corner of the shop.

Anything to use as skids would help to move it, preferably something metal. The snow would make it easier to slide. A tow truck is another option. Tow trucks have dollies that may work. Put the dollies under one set of wheels and then lift the other end of the machine with the boom or wheel lift if there's room. Wouldn't be fun messing with it in the snow and cold.

The machine was not on blacktop, and the telecom company whose lot the machine was dead in the middle of wouldn't have waited a week for me to get wheel dollies. We did get the machine to my shop; a buddy who with a shop has a gooseneck with a full power tilt deck and a winch set up for cars. A rollback would have been better, but wouldn't necessarily have had the power to simply drag a 9500lb brick with a 9' blade up on the truck either, and it would have been a crapshoot getting a driver with a brain. So I went with my friend. Between a traveling block to help the winch, some random pieces of busted plastic cable reel laying around the yard, and pushing with my truck we got it onto the trailer. Once at my shop the 40,000lb excavator pushed it off the trailer without hesitation. It's work; life is work. A man makes a choice how he defines fun. A wise man once said "Learn to love doing what you ought to do". At any rate, it wasn't -20, it wasn't raining, and it didn't die in the middle of the county road it had been on 2 minutes before; life is good . . .

Glad you got it moved. There are times when repairs turn into nightmares though.
