GEHL “Issues”

We have GEHL HL 4400 Drives fine, lifts fine, tilts down with pressure fine. Problem is it has very little tilt back pressure and if you stand on fork it won't tilt back at all. What can it possibly be?

One source could be a failed cylinder packing.

Your saying that it could be cylinder packing, meaning that the hydraulic fluid is passing around the piston inside the cylinders? Am I following you correctly? We've checked and/or switched almost all the relief valves without any changes... Thanks for replying back! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk

Yes, cylinders with damaged packing won't retract a load but can extend a smaller one since the "piston bore" is reduced to the rod diameter.

Would it only leak by in the one direction? If you tilt down and pick up the front end it'll hold itself fine... Really mind boggling... Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk

Yes, for extension, a cylinder doesn't need piston packing at all as the rod displaces fluid that's sealed by the gland. Power will be reduced, but with a 1.5" rod at 3ksi you're still looking at nearly 5300lbs of extension force per cylinder

Alright then, that's the only thing we haven't checked... lol be best to just replace both sides or is there a way to test each separate? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk

My suggestion would be to retract the cylinders all the way up, then remove the extension hose and hold the control to retract. If fluid squirts out of the extension port (base of cylinder), the packing has failed.

Thanks we'll have to try it. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
